The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked in the top five among peer institutions in North America. Your Opportunity

Working directly for the Chief Administrative Officer, the Associate Director of Finance is responsible for and oversees all related accounting functions within the Division, including financial reporting and controls, and the development and maintenance of the operating budget for the Central Library operation and associated services.

The Associate Director of Finance directs the complete budget process in conjunction with the Manager of Accounting and Budgeting. The Associate Director of Finance provides financial advice and assistance to managers and senior management of the Library in the preparation of budgets and co-ordinates the investigation of budget and variance issues. The Associate Director of Finance also supervises staff responsible for the Library Business Office and the operation of the Financial Information System (FIS). The position has a close working relationship with Business Manager for Procurement and business relations. The Associate Director of Finance acts as Deputy in the absence of the Chief Administrative Officer.

Qualifications (Minimum)

EDUCATION:

University degree in business/commerce/accounting and completion of a recognized accounting program – Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum eight (8) years of post accreditation experience is preferred. Demonstrated expertise in budget planning, financial management and control, as well as administration of budget and financial resources. Experience with strategic planning, scenario analysis, forecasting and experience working in a team environment. Experience in the application of sound financial principles and practices. Experience in use of micro-based and large-scale financial systems. Experience in a unionized environment desirable. Minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience.

SKILLS:

  • Expert knowledge of MS Office suite, word processing, spreadsheets such as Excel, and databases such as Access.
  • Knowledge of PowerBI or similar programs will be considered an asset.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with all aspects of the University's AMS, specifically FIS and RIS, and HRIS.

  • Ability to interpret complex policies and procedures related to financial, budget and human resource issues.
  • Must display ability to not only perform detailed analysis of complex financial and operational information but be able to develop and prepare meaningful reports and advice that can be useful to various senior managers for short and long term initiatives.
  • Demonstrated interest in learning and keeping abreast of financial and human resource practice and technological change.
  • Ability to communicate financial information to non-financial staff.
