Position Summary

Reporting to the Parks Services Foreman, the Operator I position performs a wide variety of work functions within Parks Section under the Public Works Department. The position uses safe work practices and procedures to carry out assigned tasks and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team.

Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to:

  • Preventative maintenance and repair duties on park furnishings, amenities, signage, irrigation systems and related parks equipment
  • Operation of light and medium duty in the maintenance of parks and open spaces.
  • Ensure that all rules and regulations pertaining to the Parks and Open Spaces are adhered to.
  • Urban Forestry maintenance and operations (including equipment operations, tree planting and response to storm damage using equipment such as wood chippers, bobcats, mowing and snow removal equipment and attachments, hand tools, etc.).
  • Cemetery interments, including the opening and closing of graves, cremations and the columbarium.
  • Assist with the marking of graves prior to excavations.
  • Ensure facilities are unlocked, and/or secured in accordance to all schedules, policies and procedures.
  • Assist with litter control. This involves the control of loose litter on highways, trails and buffers as well as the emptying of garbage receptacles throughout the entire City.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma education or equivalent and a Class 5 Driver's License. A minimum of one (1) years' experience in the safe operation of light and medium equipment in the Parks Services area is required. Must include winter equipment experience. Knowledge of the operation and servicing of a wide variety of equipment used in the Park Services section is essential. This position requires working knowledge and experience of the safe usage of powered and hand operated tools and knowledge of communication devices, such as two-way radios. General knowledge of industry practices used in the areas of Parks Furnishings, Amenities and Signage, Horticulture, Arbour Care, Turf Maintenance is required. The position requires effective oral communication skills, and flexibility in order to adapt to emerging situations and changing priorities. This is a physically demanding position; incumbents will be required to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions. This position requires your commitment for the duration of the season.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver's Abstract will be required at the time of interview.

Hours of Work: 8 hours per day (Monday – Friday)

Duration: April 27, 2026 to October 9, 2026
