Self-Managed Care Caregiver

Personal Support Worker (PSW) / Caregiver – Self-Managed Care

Position Summary

I am looking for a kind, dependable Caregiver to provide in‑home support through Alberta Health Services' Self‑Managed Care (SMC) program.

I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type II and am wheelchair-bound, so this role involves providing physical assistance.

This is my first time hiring a private caregiver, so I am hoping to find someone who is patient, communicative, and comfortable working in a more personal, one‑on‑one setting. While I am happy to provide clear guidance and expectations, prior experience in caregiving or personal support is strongly preferred.

This position is intended for a self‑employed caregiver who is able to invoice for hours worked in line with Self‑Managed Care program requirements.

Schedule & Hours

Weekly Hours: 37 hours per week

Monday – Thursday (2 shifts per day)

Daytime Shift:

  • 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (4.0 hours)

Evening Shift:

  • 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM (3.0 hours)

Daily Total (Mon–Thu): 7 hours per day, Mon–Thu Total: 28 hours

Friday (1 shift)

  • 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (9 hours)

Compensation

  • Hourly Wage: $26.49 per hour
  • Paid through the Self-Managed Care program in accordance with approved funding and Alberta employment standards

Key Responsibilities

  • Assistance with personal care such as toileting, hygiene, dressing, and grooming
  • Support with mobility and transfers
  • Frequent bending, crouching, kneeling
  • Meal preparation and light household tasks related to care
  • Companionship, and supportive presence
  • Helping maintain a safe, comfortable home environment

I have access to a ceiling lift for transfers, which will be used as the primary transfer method. Bonus if candidates are also physically capable and experienced with manual transfers.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Previous experience as a caregiver, PSW, or in a similar support role (strongly preferred)
  • Canadian citizen & fluent in English
  • Self‑employed status and ability to invoice for hours worked
  • Valid First Aid & CPR certification
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Comfortable following a care plan and maintaining professional boundaries
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to the full weekly schedule
  • Physically capable of providing hands‑on support, including transfers
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from workplace

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $26.49 per hour

Expected hours: 37 per week
