About the Organization

The objective of the Centre for Water Resources Studies (CWRS) is to apply the research resources of Dalhousie University in a manner that will address real problems in water resources that exist or are anticipated in Nova Scotia, the Atlantic region and beyond. This position will support a broad range of genomic work occurring across the CWRS, including projects in partnership with Genome Canada and the Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources.

Job Summary

The Research Technologist will work within a team to support a variety of collaborative projects through field sampling, analytical laboratory work, lab management activities, and data communication and visualization. The candidate will work closely will project leads and partner organizations, including participating First Nations and First Nations organizations, working to co-develop and implement water monitoring and sediment sampling programs for eDNA/eRNA analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Determine eDNA/eRNA sampling locations based on Nation-identified water stewardship priorities. Conduct bench-scale optimization of eDNA sampling methods, including testing of filtration volumes, filter media, passive sampler materials, and sediment coring procedures.
  • Develop and document field and laboratory protocols for eDNA/eRNA extraction and purification and sampling methods (water, passive and/or sediment cores).
  • Develop sampling plans for each participating First Nation, including sampling frequency, duration, and paired environmental metadata collection. Coordinate procurement of all required materials and consumables in advance of summer field sampling.
  • Maintain organized records of field and laboratory data and support the preparation of technical reports and data summaries.
  • Maintain day-to-day organization of the micro-room/genomics laboratory spaces. Oversee laboratory housekeeping activities in the micro-room, and perform routine calibration, maintenance or troubleshooting of molecular equipment.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Fieldwork will involve travel to participating First Nations across Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in biology, marine sciences, microbiology, environmental engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, and sequencing workflows, including library preparation and data organization.
  • Proven ability to design and execute field and laboratory sampling campaigns, particularly in environmental settings.
  • Knowledge in quality management in a genomics laboratory, including new technology implementation, validation and SOP development.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail in data management, record keeping, and material inventory.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research settings.
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel independently or with team members to sampling locations.
