Operational Technician (FTIR) - Drug Checking





City: Penticton Reports To: Director of Outreach and Clinical Supports Term: Full-Time (37.5 hours per week) Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm with ½ hour paid break Wage Range: $29.17 up to $33.49 based on education and related experience
Who is the ASK Wellness Society?  The ASK Wellness Society is a not for profit organization that supports individuals within the BC Region with opportunities and the resources to change their current situation. Purpose and Function: The Drug Checking Operational Technician will play a key role in supporting the organization's harm reduction initiatives by conducting drug checking services, ensuring the safe handling and analysis of substances, and educating individuals on harm reduction related to substance use. This technician will work directly with clients, perform drug checking using a Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer, document results, and ensure that best practices are followed in line with regulatory requirements and organizational policies. This position requires a commitment to non-judgmental, client-centered service delivery, attention to detail, and a passion for harm reduction.
Specific Responsibilities
• Conduct point-of-care drug checking tests (using both fentanyl immunoassay dipstick tests and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer tests);
• Use FTIR machine in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations to ensure safety of both technician, surrounding staff and clients (hands on training will be provided);
• Operate and maintain a Bruker Alpha FTIR spectrometer and laptop;
• Analyze fentanyl immunoassay dipstick tests and FTIR spectrometer tests; 
• Communicate results and limitations of tests to clients and answer questions relating to drug checking methods and results;
• Facilitate the proper storage and transportation of samples for laboratory testing;
• Contribute to the protection of Program Participants from abuse, and support Participants when they are in distress;
• Monitor emergencies that take place such as medical or mental health assistance and complete necessary incident reports;
• When necessary, be trained to be the first to respond to an overdose situation with on the spot overdose response and support;
• Be prepared to work calmly and together with your team, paramedics and police in crisis situations;
• Ensure Limitation of Service Notices are completed and current;
• Help maintain a clean and organized workspace by doing light housekeeping in the office space;
• Monitor and move along community members who are loitering in and around the property;

• Ensure compliance with all ASK supportive standards, policies and procedures.
Administrative Responsibilities:
• Keep meticulous records of drug checking results for the BCCSU's project evaluation requirements;
• Responsible for data entry as it relates to the FTIR machine testing and fentanyl drug checking. Both paper and electronic reporting as required;
• Maintain complete documentation, statistics and records in files and on ShareVision database; 
• Assist team with required verbal and written reports, case notes, letters, memoranda, and year end reports; 
• Maintain files and documentation to the COA Standard; 
• When requested, be a member of the COA's Performance and Quality Improvement team in which you will encourage the organization to use data to identify areas of needed improvement and implement improvement plans in support of achieving performance targets, program goals, client satisfaction, and positive client outcomes. 
Qualifications and Suitability:
• Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in chemistry, biology, or related field;
• Strong awareness of harm reduction strategies;
• Ability to remain neutral, non-judgemental and cordial when interacting with marginalized client population;
• Experience with reporting and communications systems;
• Knowledge of public health, health services or related fields an asset; 
• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office;
• Professional and responsible with sensitive and confidential issues;
• Ability to work as a team member in a case management setting involving multi-agency supports;
• Communicate effectively with clients and staff;
• Strong organizational and time management skills;
• Must pass criminal record check and reference screening;
• Level 1 First Aid required.
• In-house Violence Prevention Training provided;
