The Education Act created the Alberta Teaching Profession Commission, which appointed a Commissioner to oversee teacher, and teacher leader, conduct and competency complaints for the profession. This process will apply equally to all teacher and teacher leaders under the Education Act.

The Commission will oversee a new model for teacher and teacher leader professionalism and disciplinary matters that will bring Alberta in line with best practices used in comparable provinces and other regulated professions. The New Commission will further protect students and enhance accountability and transparency for disciplinary matters.

Role Responsibilities

The Investigator plays a key role in maintaining public confidence in Alberta's K–12 education system by conducting investigations into complaints of alleged unprofessional conduct and professional incompetence involving certificated teachers and teacher leaders. Investigations are guided by legislation, policy, and procedures, and may involve coordination with law enforcement and agencies across jurisdictions.

Working under the supervision of the Manager, Investigations, the Investigator applies sound judgment, discretion, and investigative techniques to ensure fair and timely resolution of complaints.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct Investigations:

    • Gather, secure, and preserve evidence
  • Interview complainants, witnesses, and respondents
  • Take statements and examine records
  • Create and manage investigative plans and timelines

2. Support Decision-Making:

    • Prepare detailed investigative reports
  • Manage assigned caseloads
  • Provide accurate information to support the Commissioner's decisions
  • Be prepared to be called as a witness in hearings when required

3. Collaborate and Contribute:

    • Participate in team meetings and working groups to support branch objectives
  • Participate in legislative, policy, and/or program working committees
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders, including law enforcement and educational agencies

Qualifications

University degree in a related field (Education, Public Administration, Legal Studies) and no experience.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience;

Preference will be given to candidates with minimum one year experience in investigations in a regulatory environment.

This is a Temporary salaried position for 18 months, working 36.25 hours per week, Monday – Friday 8:15am – 4:30pm.

Working location is 8th floor, Petwin Tower Building, Ave NW, Edmonton.

A written assessment will be used as part of the screening/selection process.

  • Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening (including a vulnerable sector check)

  • Employee annual professional fees/dues are not covered for this position
