This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.
Under the direction of the Manager, Community Corrections, the Community Youth Reintegration Officer (CYRO) is responsible for the direct supervision and reintegration of young offenders under community-based orders. The position ensures compliance with court-ordered conditions, provides risk and needs assessments, coordinates programming, and supports youth rehabilitation throughout Nunavut. The CYRO travels regularly to communities across the territory to meet clients, strengthen local supports, and promote culturally appropriate reintegration services.
Major Responsibilities For This Position Include
Supervising and supporting young offenders on court orders, ensuring compliance with those orders while promoting rehabilitation and reintegration.
Developing and implementing individualized case management plans that incorporate Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and community-based supports.
Conducting risk assessments and providing recommendations to the Court regarding appropriate interventions.
Collaborating with social workers, mental health professionals, law enforcement, educational institutions, and families to provide coordinated services.
Coordinating with youth custody facilities to ensure community admission and comprehensive reintegration plans are completed upon release.
Providing crisis intervention and support for young offenders experiencing trauma, mental health issues, or substance use challenges.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the completion of a two-year Diploma in Social Sciences or a related field, along with one (1) year of related experience. During the one-year probationary period, the incumbent is expected to successfully complete mandatory training including the Nunavut Healing and Learning Together program, Mental Health First Aid, First Aid & CPR, and Basic Community Corrections Officer Training. Knowledge of child development is considered an asset.
This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
