Position Summary:
As a Junior Estimator, you will support the preparation of cost estimates, proposals, and tender submissions for ship repair, maintenance, and construction projects at Ontario Shipyards. Working under the guidance of senior estimators and collaborating closely with project managers, engineers, and procurement, you will assist in compiling data, developing preliminary cost breakdowns, and ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant bid submissions.
Responsibilities:
- Review project requirements, specifications, and engineering drawings to assist in developing accurate cost estimates.
- Compile, format, and proofread tender documents, compliance matrices, and executive summaries.
- Ensure consistency, accuracy, and clarity across all written and technical components of bid submissions.
- Track submission deadlines, coordinate required input from multiple departments, and ensure on-time delivery of proposals.
- Maintain and update the tender log, historical bid archive, and reference materials for benchmarking.
- Assist in preparing preliminary cost breakdowns for labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and schedules under the direction of senior estimators.
- Collect, verify, and record pricing information from suppliers and subcontractors in collaboration with the Procurement team.
- Maintain estimating data, cost assumptions, and supporting documentation in an organized and auditable format.
- Support the identification of risks, gaps, and uncertainties in estimates and escalate findings as appropriate.
- Stay current on RFP/RFQ requirements, industry standards, and client expectations to improve submission quality.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the Estimating and Project Management teams.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Diploma or degree in communications, business, engineering, or a related field.
- Strong written communication, organizational skills, and high attention to detail.
- Experience supporting or preparing RFP/RFQ submissions is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with strong document formatting skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Prior experience in ship repair, ship construction, or a technical estimating environment is an asset but not required.
