Job Description
Kaplan International Pathways Canada is hiring a casual Academic Life Skills (ALS) Facilitator to join our team. This role supports international students enrolled in the Year One Foundation Program at the University of Alberta by delivering interactive workshops designed to enhance students' academic skills, study strategies, and university readiness.

Main Responsibilities
Reporting to the Student Success Supervisor, the ALS Facilitator will be responsible for:

  • Developing, planning, and delivering academic and life skills sessions for international university students, including interactive activities, discussions, and practical exercises.
  • Facilitating workshops that cover study strategies, note-taking, time management, exam preparation, academic communication, and other essential skills for success in higher education.
  • Scheduling ALS sessions throughout each term of the program in collaboration with the program team.
  • Creating supporting materials, handouts, and worksheets to enhance student learning.
  • Providing guidance to students in applying academic skills, taking into account language proficiency and cultural differences.
  • Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student engagement and provide feedback on student development.
  • Fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that encourages participation and confidence.

Skills And Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Currently enrolled in or has completed a degree in education, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, tutoring, or teaching, especially for international students.
  • Strong understanding of effective study strategies, academic skills development, and university-level expectations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and sensitively to students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Patience, adaptability, and a commitment to helping international students succeed academically.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prepare session materials in advance.

Location & Availability:

  • This position is based in person at the University of Alberta's North Campus in Edmonton.
  • Casual position: 4-6 hours every 2 weeks.

About the Year One Foundation Program – University of Alberta: The Year One Foundation Program is a joint educational partnership between Kaplan International Pathways Canada and the University of Alberta, launching in 2025. It provides international students who do not meet direct entry requirements with an opportunity to gain admission to the University after successfully completing a one-year program. The program includes credit-bearing courses taught by university instructors and non credit classes designed to supplement skill gaps and prepare students for success in their degree studies. Kaplan staff support students from recruitment through to program completion, ensuring a smooth transition into university life.
