Position Overview
As a Lead Journeyperson Electrician, you will play a key role within GlobalTech Group's Electrical division. This position combines the technical expertise of a certified Journeyperson with the leadership and coordination responsibilities required to ensure project success.
The Lead Journeyperson is responsible for performing all standard electrical installation, maintenance, and repair duties while also providing on-site leadership, including organizing and scheduling daily work, guiding apprentices and electricians, ensuring code compliance, and maintaining clear communication between the field team and the Project Manager/ Foreman.
This role is ideal for an experienced Journeyperson who demonstrates initiative, accountability, and strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage priorities and ensure that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Coordination
- Lead a small team of electricians and apprentices, assigning daily tasks and providing technical guidance.
- Act as the primary on-site liaison between the project team and the Project Manager.
- Organize and schedule on-site activities, ensuring work progresses according to project timelines and specifications.
- Determine and request required materials and equipment; verify deliveries and ensure efficient use of resources.
- Conduct on-site safety meetings and enforce compliance with all company and provincial safety regulations.
- Oversee quality control and ensure all work meets the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), ULC, and NFPA standards.
- Support training and mentoring of junior team members, promoting skill development and adherence to safety standards.
Technical Responsibilities
- Perform electrical work, run conduit and cable, mount devices, install electrical panels, outlets and fixtures as needed for ancillary equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and other technical documents, work from plan drawings and field layouts.
- Test and verify proper operation systems, including initiating devices, detection circuits, notification circuits, supervisory circuits, and interface devices.
- Troubleshoot electrical system faults: circuit integrity issues, communication failures, device malfunctions, power supply problems; perform diagnostics and corrective repairs.
- Ensure all installations comply with relevant codes and standards (e.g., Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), National Fire Code of Canada, local provincial fire prevention regulations, and manufacturer specifications for fire alarm systems).
- Maintain work areas clean, safe, and organized; ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.
- Follow company safety protocols, wear required PPE, ensure safe operation on-site, and maintain awareness of hazards.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other trades to coordinate system integration and sequencing of work.
- Provide support during system commissioning, certification testing, and hand-off to clients; assist in generating documentation, checklists and system logs.
Qualifications and Skills
- Journeyperson Electrician certification.
- Minimum 5 years of commercial electrical experience, with some team or site leadership exposure.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, blueprints, and installation best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and oversee day-to-day on-site activities.
- Leadership experience in coordinating small teams and mentoring apprentices.
- Fire alarm systems experience is an asset but not required; training will be provided.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities with clients, trades, and team members.
- Commitment to safety, organization, and professional conduct.
Other Requirements
- Willingness to travel to client sites in Calgary, Edmonton, and surrounding Western Canada locations, including out-of-town overnight stays, as needed.
- Class 5 driver's license.
- Ability to pass a vulnerable sector check and a secret military clearance.
- All employees are expected to follow safe work policies and practices, participate in safety training and comply with all applicable legislation and regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move around construction sites for extended periods.
- Frequently lift, carry, and move materials, ladders, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kg). Adequate vision and hearing for system work and safety awareness.
- Comfortable working at heights using ladders, lifts, or scaffolding.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching overhead, and working in confined spaces.
- Must have sufficient visual acuity and hearing to identify colour-coded wiring, read blueprints, and detect system alarms or signals.
- Ability to maintain physical activity throughout the workday in varying environmental conditions.
- Must be able to safely operate a company vehicle or personal vehicle for travel between sites.
