The Machining Operations Team Leader is responsible for the oversight of all metal machining operations for the plant, with primary duties focused on driving optimal on-time product output, while also ensuring strict quality standards are always met. This role reports directly to the Plant Supervisor and is a key member of the management.
Daily responsibilities include careful job planning that aligns with plant productivity targets/metrics, product quality management, directing/leading the work of a team of 12 machine operators and Swiss-Style CNC Machinists, and partnering with leaders of other plant departments.
Essential Functions:
- Provide direct and hands-on management, guidance, and leadership to the Machining team members on all shifts, working with each person to ensure they excel at their assigned tasks and meet all operational productivity targets.
- Inspect work being performed throughout the day, verifying that all production standards are enforced and quality expectations are met.
- Optimize the capabilities of all metal machining machine such as break press, punch press and CNC (Tsugami multi-axis Swiss-style / Doosan & Haas) manufacturing equipment, schedule and oversee preventative maintenance tasks occur as expected so that unplanned equipment failures do not occur, and identify new equipment and tooling that will improve productivity with reduced down time.
- Consistently ensure that the manufacturing area is always free from Safety hazards and Environmental risks, and that all employees adhere to the Safety, Environmental, and Health standards outlined by the Company.
- Regularly seek out new methods or opportunities to increase productivity and improve equipment effectiveness.
- Responsible for ensuring on-time production of parts so that all customer delivery commitments are met.
- Regularly focus on the elimination of all unplanned scrap, and ensure that no non-conforming parts are passed onward in the manufacturing process.
- Provide input on the design and installation of equipment for new manufacturing processes.
- Ensure adherence to process control procedures, operating instructions, and all quality control instructions
- Formulates long and short-range strategies for continuous improvements for all plant manufacturing functions
- Control quality, delivery, cost of production, work in process levels, and monitors production through planning
- Recommends and purchases new equipment for expansion, efficiency, cost reductions, quality or improvement
- Maintains and enhances a team environment and motivates the production workforce.
- Controls cost to manufacture, work-in-process inventory, and thru-put.
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
- Successful prior metal machining manufacturing experience in supervision or management.
- Prior experience with CNC, Punch machines, Saw machines
- Demonstrated ability to develop, relentlessly execute, and deliver results in conformance with action plans.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations and priorities.
- Willing to work flexible hours, including off-shifts, weekends, etc. as needed to meet production demands.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
Desired Skills:
- Highly organized, self-motivated individual who can work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Strategic vision for new and future technology to support manufacturing and operational excellence.
- Prefer background and experience with 6S implementation and management.
- Proven ability to work hands-on with the team to achieve objectives.
Experience & Education
- Prefer 4+ years of Canadian experience in operations in a manufacturing environment.
- Training/experience in manufacturing processes, supervision, and operations management.
- Continuous Improvement, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma Certification
