Branch Information:

The Wildland Fire Management (WFM) branch contributes to the protection of people, property and the development of sustainable, fire resilient Yukon communities and infrastructure. WFM directly maintains and oversees the safe training and operational practices, and values natural ecological processes to ensure operational efficiency within the territory. WFM is the primary operational response branch for wildfires and floods within unincorporated areas of the Yukon.

About the Position:

At Wildland Fire Management, our priority is to protect life, property and resources in a safe, professional and effective manner. As a member of the team, the Communications Officer works as part of the Planning and Science section to capture and disseminate territorial wildfire management information. Day-to-day duties include creating and distributing the territorial wildfire activity report, creating and distributing a variety of wildfire updates, updating digital media assets, preparing and implementing short-term communications plans, and responding to requests from the media.

Essential Qualifications:

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet each of the following qualifications. Please note, selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Experience working in the field of journalism, media relations, and / or communications, or relevant postsecondary education
  • Experience preparing and distributing a variety of print and online communications tools
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with regularly competing priorities
  • The ability to create and distribute information based on the needs of a variety of audiences
    Photography / videography experience would be considered an asset

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on the following:

  • Excellent written communication and public speaking skills
  • Familiarity communicating through social media and other advertising mediums
  • Ability to take direction and follow instructions
  • Ability to take initiative, exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in stressful situations
  • Knowledge of Yukon's geography, history and First Nations culture

Additional Information:

Conditions of employment

  • In periods of elevated fire activity, this position may be required to work remotely, with limited notice, for up to 14 days at a time.
  • Successful completion of a moderate fitness test.
  • Valid Yukon Class 5 Driver's Licence (or equivalent).

Job Requirements

  • Long work hours and stand-by availability may be required during periods of high fire danger.
  • Travel to communities within Yukon may be required.
    This position may require flight in small fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft as well as supervised exposure to wildfire operations in remote locations.
