About The Newcomer Centre

The Newcomer Centre has been a welcoming space for immigrants and refugees since 1981. Every year, we support people from over 100 countries in more than 30 languages.

Our vision is simple but powerful: every newcomer has the opportunity to thrive. Our work is grounded in four core values: Interconnectedness, Empowerment, Compassion, and Accountability.

We believe in people's strengths. We work together. And we show up every day to make it easier for newcomers to settle, grow, and thrive.

About the Role

The Newcomer Centre is building a pool of qualified on-call English as an Additional Language (EAL) Instructors to support our LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) programming. This is an on-call/substitute position with no guaranteed hours. However, instructors in this pool may be contacted for both short-notice coverage and longer substitute assignments. Teaching opportunities may also be available in the ECALA Community English program. The pay rate for ECALA classes is different from the LINC program.

If you're passionate about supporting adult newcomer learners and have flexible availability, we encourage you to apply.

Shifts & Availability

This role may involve in-person, online, or hybrid instruction. Applicants should clearly indicate their availability, preferred shift(s), and preferred delivery method(s) in their application.

Shift options include:
- Morning: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Afternoon: 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
- Evening: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Classroom Delivery

- Deliver engaging and level-appropriate English language instruction to adult newcomers using the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) frameworks.

- Adjust lessons to meet learner needs based on available class profiles, teaching notes, or substitute instructions.

- Foster a welcoming and respectful classroom environment that supports diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

- Integrate real-life communication tasks into instruction, supporting learners' language development for work, school, and everyday life.

Lesson Planning & Adaptation

- Use provided lesson materials or prepare your own lesson plans when needed, ensuring alignment with CLB levels and program outcomes.

- Modify teaching strategies in real time when subbing to support learners with varying English levels and learning styles.

- Incorporate digital tools and online resources into instruction where applicable.

Assessment & Learner Progress (longer assignments)

- Assess learner progress using PBLA tools (can-do statements, learner reflections, skill-using tasks).

- Provide ongoing feedback and individualized support to encourage learner engagement and improvement.

- Maintain basic learner records during longer substitute assignments and communicate progress to the returning instructor.

Team Collaboration

- Communicate clearly with Language Services Coordinators and other instructors about class needs and any notable concerns.

- Attend meetings or professional development sessions when applicable.

- Contribute to a collaborative, learner-centered instructional culture at the Newcomer Centre.

What You Bring

- Bachelor's degree in Education, Arts, or a related field.

- TESL Canada or ATESL certification (mandatory for all instructors delivering LINC).

- Minimum 2 years' experience teaching English to adult EAL learners in multicultural, newcomer, or settlement-focused environments.

- Demonstrated experience using digital teaching platforms (e.g., Zoom, MS Teams, Google Classroom) and instructional tools.

- Solid understanding of CLB levels, PBLA, and settlement language learning principles.

- Strong classroom management skills with the ability to quickly adapt to different learner groups.

Assets (Preferred Skills and Experience)

- Experience working with task-based, learner-centered, or trauma-informed instructional approaches.

- Knowledge of community resources and services available to support newcomer learners.

- Familiarity with hybrid or online-first instructional models.

- Additional languages and cross-cultural communication skills are an asset.

- A genuine passion for newcomer education and a flexible, solution-oriented mindset.

How to Apply

Please submit your résumé and a brief cover letter. Be sure to include:
- Your availability
- Preferred delivery method (in-person, online, hybrid)
