JOB DESCRIPTION – SIDEWALK SNOWPLOW OPERATOR

Location: City of Ottawa

Schedule: Variable shifts / Days / Nights / Weekends depending on weather

Status: Winter seasonal position (with the possibility of year-round employment)

Primary Role

Operate a sidewalk snowplow to clear snow from sidewalks and pedestrian pathways, ensuring safe access for the public.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a sidewalk snowplow in urban areas.
  • Clear sidewalks, bike paths, bus stop areas, and pedestrian zones.
  • Apply abrasives or de-icing products as required.
  • Follow assigned routes and municipal priority areas.
  • Perform start-up and end-of-shift equipment checks (fuel, oil, hydraulics, blades).
  • Report any mechanical issues or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Communicate with dispatch and other operators via radio.
  • Maintain a daily log (hours worked, areas completed, materials used).

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license (minimum Class G).
  • Experience operating light or compact equipment (asset).
  • Ability to work day or night, depending on weather conditions.
  • Reliable and consistent attendance.
  • Ability to follow route maps and instructions clearly.

  • Ability to manage pace and workload during snowstorms.

Rôle principal

Opérer une déneigeuse à trottoir afin de dégager la neige des trottoirs et des parcours piétonniers, et ainsi assurer des déplacements sécuritaires pour les citoyens.

Responsabilités

  • Conduire et opérer une déneigeuse à trottoir de manière sécuritaire en zone urbaine.
  • Déneiger trottoirs, pistes cyclables, arrêts d'autobus et zones piétonnières.
  • Appliquer de l'abrasif ou des produits fondants au besoin.
  • Suivre les parcours préétablis et les priorités d'intervention.
  • Effectuer les vérifications de départ et de fin de quart (huile, carburant, hydraulique, lames).
  • Signaler rapidement toute anomalie mécanique ou situation dangereuse.
  • Communiquer avec le répartiteur et les autres opérateurs par radio.
  • Tenir à jour un journal de bord (heures, secteurs, matériaux utilisés).

Exigences

  • Permis de conduire valide (classe G minimum).
  • Expérience en conduite de machinerie légère ou compacte (atout).
  • Capacité à travailler de jour ou de nuit selon les conditions météo.
  • Assiduité, fiabilité et constance.
  • Capacité à suivre des itinéraires et directives clairement.

  • Conduite précise dans des environnements étroits (trottoirs, véhicules stationnés, présence de piétons).
  • Bonne gestion du rythme de travail lors des chutes de neige.
