Position Summary

Are you interested in an opportunity to grow professionally within a positive and progressive culture? Northern Health is seeking a Health Information Management (HIM), Advisor to join our Health Information Management department

Reporting to the HIM Coordinator – Professional Practice, the HIM Advisor is an integral member of both the regional Health Information Management team and the local health service delivery team. The HIM Advisor provides leadership to their community(ies) on appropriate collection, access, and use of health information through the development and application of health information standards in records management, release of information and registration utilizing technology available for distance communications as well as face to face visits when appropriate. They support and participate in the evaluation of adherence to HIM standards. The HIM Advisor assists in the development, testing, implementation support, maintenance and enhancement of relevant health information systems/applications and provides support and training services for a variety of internal and external users. The HIM Advisor facilitates the consequential organizational changes created by the implementation and ongoing use health information systems, policies, and procedures. Travels to other sites throughout the NH care provider sites as required.

No remote work however flexible hospital location, depending on site space. Focus will be on recruiting to Terrace.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days - 08:00 to 16:00

Kitimat General Hospital and Health Centre is a 20-bed Acute Care unit including 2 maternity beds. It integrates Acute Care, residential care, public health and community care in one facility. The services include:

  • Outpatient Community Chemotherapy clinic
  • Regional Orthopaedic Centre
  • Regional Palliative Care Nurse consultant
  • Mountainview Lodge a 36-bed residential and complex care facility

Kitimat Set in a beautiful and natural ocean, mountain and valley paradise, Kitimat is located on the Douglas Channel just a few miles off British Columbia's inside passage. Kitimat was built in the 1950's and is one of BC's youngest coastal communities. Main industries include an aluminum smelter, a pulp and paper mill and a petrochemical manufacturer. The population of Kitimat is approximately 8,236. The community has three elementary schools, two secondary schools, and one post-secondary school. Qualifications
  • Graduation from a recognized Health Information Management program.
  • Certified by the Canadian College of Health Information Management and eligible for active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association
  • One year's recent related experience in a HIMS department of an acute care health care facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current valid BC Driver's License.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Knowledge Integration: Knowledge of protection of privacy and freedom of information legislation, patient's rights to confidentiality and legal requirements to produce records. Knowledge of health information systems and database management, statistical calculations, and interpretation of reports from administrative and clinical databases.
  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and the members of the interdisciplinary team using, oral written and computer communication means. Demonstrated ability to effectively resolve conflict.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem-solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision-making skills using a systems approach.
  • Management: Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives and establish priorities. Manages time and resources, implements activities to promote cooperation among the interdisciplinary team, supervises responsibilities of others, and collaborates across disciplines.
  • Leadership: Promotes staff morale, engagement, and risk-taking. Demonstrates creative planning for
  • change and innovations, implementation of NH policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development of self and others.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
  • Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Cerner, Med2020 and Windows based programs. Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools. Demonstrated ability in the use of e-mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as
  • required in the specific practice area.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
