Clinical Health Information Management Specialist

Overview Clinical Health Information Management Specialist (CHIMS) - Health Records Please note the wage range for this position: $32.77 to $33.83 per hour for Registered CHIMS – Health Records. Applicants who begin employment prior to obtaining CHIMA registration will be compensated at the uncertified rate of $30.56 to $31.90 per hour until registration is complete. Responsibilities Reviews health records quantitatively to ascertain that records meet necessary criteria, and reports errors and/or omissions. Monitors and maintains a system for charts that are past due and reports to the Manager, notifying physicians that are delinquent in chart completion. Assembles records for permanent filing. Receives, evaluates and responds to correspondence, telephone requests and in-person inquiries regarding release of health records. Attends court with the health record, under subpoena. Assesses information in health records and assigns codes according to ICD-10CA and CCI, and maintains abstracting database. Retrieves patient charts from previous admissions and directs them to the appropriate floor/unit on admission. Answers telephone, takes messages, screens and re-routes calls. Assumes responsibility for the microfilming process. Files charts in the main department and alternate storage areas. Participates in departmental QA programs. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Active member in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association or certification with CHIMA obtained within six months of start date; preference given to fully qualified candidates. Proof of current CPE credits or recent graduate (within the last 12 months) with proof of diploma. Knowledge and use of Folio. Knowledge of Medical Staff Rules & Regulations, Public Hospitals Act, Personal Health Information Privacy Act and other pertinent legislation. For internal candidates, disciplinary and attendance records will be considered. Physical Demands Strength: Rarely – lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling. Mobility: Frequently – prolonged sitting; Occasionally – standing and walking on hard surfaces; Rarely – crouching/squatting, climbing, balancing.
