POSITION SUMMARY:

The HSE Advisor position is responsible for supporting the management and maintenance of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) systems. Key responsibilities include assessing project site HSE risks, developing plans to mitigate or eliminate risks, participating in project site safety activities, maintaining the HSE training program, coordinating and leading audits and inspections, tracking corrective actions and incident data, reviewing critical safety documentation, and performing other related duties as required.

A successful HSE Advisor is highly organized, adaptable, and detail oriented.

The HSE Advisor reports directly to the HSE Manager and will collaborate closely with various managers, project managers, and other Milestone team members to ensure alignment and compliance with HSE standards.

SCOPE

Serve as a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) leader, acting as the primary point of contact for assigned programs and initiatives. Utilize safety management tools to monitor working hours, incidents, near misses, and other key data for reporting purposes. Prepare and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans, and statistical reports, and escalate issues to management when necessary.

Demonstrate urgency and a strong commitment to achieving objectives. Maintain exceptional attention to detail, stay highly organized, and adapt effectively to shifting priorities and rapid change. Analyze events, issues, and problems to develop timely, optimal solutions while promoting a positive health and safety culture across the organization.

Communicate with clarity and impact, fostering an environment of openness and honesty. Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation, and work seamlessly within a high-performing team.

Possess in-depth knowledge of provincial health and safety legislation, standards, and industry best practices, along with a demonstrated passion for safety leadership and accountability to the highest standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and Expectations:

  • Conduct regular evaluations of project sites, equipment, and work practices to ensure compliance with HSE requirements.
  • Assist Project Managers in developing project-specific HSE plans.
  • Inspect and address HSE-related concerns to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations.
  • Lead comprehensive incident investigations with project leadership and share lessons learned across the organization.
  • Review and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and support to Regional Managers and General Superintendents in implementing the HSE program.
  • Support the Subcontractor Management Program.
  • Manage HSE Pre-Qualification Questionnaires.
  • Support and maintain the safety training program, including updates, organization, and record/recertification management.
  • Manage the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) inspection and maintenance program.
  • Implement control measures for handling hazardous or potentially hazardous materials.
  • Compile safety data and analyze trends for reporting purposes.
  • Demonstrate Milestone's core values and foster a positive, caring safety culture.
  • Exhibit leadership and commitment to HSE programs and processes.

HEALTH AND SAFETY:

Reads, understands, and follows MECI's Corporate Health and Safety Program, Policy, and Procedures. Ensures that health and safety is considered in the performance of all activities, both on and off the job. Participation in Health & Safety initiatives will be monitored and reviewed as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education Requirements:

  • HSE Certificate or Diploma required
  • CRSP designation is an asset
  • COR Internal Auditor experience is an asset
  • ISO 9000 certificate is an asset
  • NHSA schooling or certification is an asset

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in similar industry
  • Construction industry exposure/experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills; verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Excellent computer skills; Office 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with Health & Safety software, Salus, SiteDocs, EHS Insight or Intelex, ISN, BambooHR, Excel
  • Highly organized, adaptable, and detail-oriented.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is a combination of office and project site environments. A reliable vehicle, clean drivers abstract, and the ability get security clearance is a must.
