POSITION: Practical Nursing Program Coordinator

LOCATION: Island Career Academy or assigned intake location

DEPARTMENT: Faculty

REPORTS TO: Director of Programs / HR Manager

SUBORDINATE STAFF: Practical Nursing Instructors and Clinical Instructors

JOB SUMMARY

This key leadership position has the primary responsibility and authority to administer the Practical Nursing Program. This position reports on matters relating to teaching, advising students, utilizing and teaching the approved Practical Nursing Program curriculum, program revisions, clinical site management, textbook selection (if applicable).

As a key external representative of the college, the Practical Nursing Program Coordinator will utilize experiences and professional judgment to develop credible and meaningful relationships with businesses and or the community ensuring the strictest confidentiality. The PN Program Coordinator will work closely with the management team to identify opportunities and resolve concerns.

The coordinator handles multiple responsibilities, solves complex problems and provides leadership, supervision and direction to the Practical Nursing Education Instructors ensuring consistency with the mission and vision of the College.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Practical Nursing Program Coordinator performs the following essential functions:

PERSONNEL

· Recruits, interviews and recommends qualified persons for open positions

· Arranges for coverage of classes during own absences and emergency leave

· Promotes rapport within the college and community

· Oversees Administration of the Practical Nursing Program

· Evaluates annually Practical Nursing Instructional staff

· Assigns faculty loads in accordance with Program Regulations

· Fosters development of team concept of program responsibility and commitment to the Practical Nursing Program objectives and mission by encouraging active member participation

BUDGETS

· Makes recommendations regarding equipment and software purchases and equipment maintenance contracts.

· Arranges for the procurement and inventory of supplies and instructional materials

ADMINISTRATION

· Attends and participates in faculty meetings

· Participates in Practical Nursing accreditation reviews and report

· Coordinates program to meet Provincial Practical Nursing requirements.

· Assist in publicizing and disseminating information about the Practical Nursing Program

· Works with admissions officer in properly recruiting students

· Coordinates program agreements/contracts with outside entities

· Participates in professional organizations, as appropriate

· Provides an environment conducive to learning for students and nursing

· Promotes the development of students and learning

· Ensures ongoing evaluation of the Practical Nursing Program

· Hears and assesses faculty and student concerns

· Communicates accurately college policies and procedures

· Maintains meaningful working relationships with Practical Nursing clinical agencies that provide clinical experiences for students.

ADVISING

· Serves as the primary advisor for the Practical Nursing Program

· Serves as mentor and advisor for the Practical Nursing faculty at the college

PRACTICAL NURSING COORDINATOR LEAD INSTRUCTOR'S DUTIES:

· The Practical Nursing Instructor is required to follow strict guidelines set by Island Career Academy as outlined in their employee contract and the rules and regulations they agree to.

· Prior to the program start date, the instructor must prepare a course delivery plan. This overview is a detailed outline showing what courses will be taught each week. The overview also includes: lesson objectives, guest speakers, demonstrations as well as testing and assignments schedules.

· Instructors are required to develop daily lesson plans (based on an approved curriculum) Daily lesson plans must be completed and available one full week in advance.

· Ensuring that all learning outcomes in the program courses (and external certificates) are met.

· Deliver daily curriculum content in a class setting.

· Conducts and supervises laboratory work, issues assignments, testing and exams.

· Prepares and administers examinations, evaluates student progress, and maintains records of student classroom and clinical experience.

· Prepare and maintain a classroom environment that promotes positivity, engagement and diverse learning styles. (Instructors are encouraged to use current technology to further engage students in the curriculum whenever possible)

· Classroom management. Instructors are required to manage and control their individual classroom/students to ensure it is a safe, positive and a hazard free space for all students. Instructors are expected to resolve conflicts, address student absenteeism and address any behavior that is disruptive in nature.

· Provide guidance, advice and support to all students.

· Prepare, weight and grade all tests and assignments to ensure the development and completion of appropriate assessment/evaluation strategies are met.

· Conduct program related demonstrations

· Determine if and when a subject matter experts (SME's) should be contacted to deliver specific program content. Instructors must obtain SME approval from management. Upon approval, instructors are then responsible to research, contact, qualify and schedule the SME to deliver the approved content.

· Communicate with program related facilities and partners to facilitate all practical placement arrangements. These duties include contacting potential placement partners, securing and approving appropriate placements, monitoring placement progress and reviewing partner evaluations of the student's practical placement term.

· Completion of all required program courses to Island Career Academy standards.

· Provide individual instruction to individuals that require it.

· Report to the Director of Programs if a student assessed is unsuitable and/or is having difficulty or unable to complete the educational program in accordance to the established standards.

· Instructors are responsible to seek out professional development opportunities to

· support lifelong learning and Island Career Academy's commitment to providing students with instructors who are continuously learning and able to share current practises.

· Instructors are responsible to provide weekly reports to the Student Services coordinator including attendance reports, payable hours, grades, incident reports etc.

· Maintain classroom supplies and equipment.

· Ensure their students have read and fully understand the rules and regulations set by Island Career Academy and address students who have violated any.

· Instructors have a duty to lead by example and are to present themselves in a professional, positive and approachable manner at all times.

· Instructors have a responsibility to identify, address and if necessary, report any abusive, harassing or bullying behavior towards a student or staff member that they have witnessed in the classroom or on school premises.

· Attends and participates in faculty meetings

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or a Bachelor of Nursing (BN)

· Registration with, or eligibility for registration with, the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)

· At least five years of current relevant nursing experience in a clinical setting.

· Master's in Education (MEd) or a Masters in Nursing (MN) is considered an asset.

MINIMUM SKILLS / ABILITIES:

· Minimum of five (5) years recent (within the last 7 years) and relevant occupational experience including supervisory experience in clinical practice in acute care, long-term care or community.

· Experience as a Nursing faculty, program manager or nurse manager is considered an asset.

· Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, would be an asset.

· Previous Teaching/ facilitation experience is considered an asset.

· A strong desire and enthusiasm to teach students with diverse backgrounds and knowledge, along with your superb presentation, interpersonal and team building skills make you an ideal candidate.

RELATIONSHIPS

Internally, the Practical Nursing Instructor works closely with management, instructors and students.

Externally, the Practical Nursing Instructor communicates with clinical partners to secure student placements. The Practical Nursing Instructor is required to remain current in all industry practices and will work closely with clinical partners to establish professional working relationships.

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

· Class/Learning environment is professional and free of hazards.

· Instructors may sit or stand for extended periods of time while teaching but are provided with breaks that are in accordance with Nova Scotia Labour Standards

· Operation hours are based on a standard work week schedule (closed on weekends).

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS/INDICATORS:

· Performance appraisals will be conducted every 6 months for the 1st year of employment and annually after one year.

· Student evaluations are monitored and audited monthly.

· Daily, weekly or monthly reports, as required by the Director of Programs will be reviewed and approved by management.
