Job Summary:

The Mine Supervisor is responsible for providing technical knowledge, operations experience, and management skills in the daily direction and performance of the safe, efficient, and quality work performed by mine operations. This role reports to the Mine General Foreman and will be responsible and capable, on a daily basis, of obtaining short and long-term objectives, modifying shift plans to maximize resources, and leading the mining team in all safety and production-related matters. This includes supporting and directing personnel in the production cycle, accurately completing shift logs, and performing routine safety audits and workplace inspections. The Mine Supervisor must be flexible to the changing needs of the underground mining operation.

** Please note that this role involves rotating through all three shifts (days, afternoons, midnights) and regularly working overtime (extended hours, weekends).

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that mining operations operate safely and effectively to meet the needs of the business.
  • Supervise and direct mining activities at the working face to ensure mining cycles continue in an effective, efficient manner. Ensure working faces meet company standards for safety.
  • Lead the mining operation with minimal downtime and maximum productivity while maintaining a safety focus, ensuring crew members know and follow company policies and procedures, and the OHSA Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants.

  • Maintain an accurate shift log to communicate reliable production and safety information, as required. The log must detail explanations for any variances from established targets. This position necessitates tracking, analyzing, and reporting all significant variances to operations management, and subsequently developing and presenting appropriate action plans to the mine's leadership team for implementation.
  • Complete thorough pre-shift and post-shift communications to effectively relay all necessary information, occurrences, and instructions to the relieving supervisor, ensuring a seamless and informed transition between shifts.
  • Actively involve workers in decisions regarding best and safest work practices, including confirming that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is utilized for assigned tasks. Furthermore, it is essential to ensure that any non-routine tasks are identified, that safe procedures are developed for them, and that these procedures are fully communicated to all involved employees prior to the start of the operation.
  • Advise all workers of actual or potential risks to their health or safety. Concurrently, leadership must take every reasonable action to ensure the overall health and safety of all workers within the workplace, fostering a proactive safety culture and complying with regulatory requirements.
  • Execute routine checks of main infrastructure and equipment, including conveyor lines, explosive storage, travel ways, fire suppression systems, and equipment conditions while in use.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and provide leadership to assigned personnel. Train employees on established safety, operating, and maintenance rules and regulations. Hold personnel accountable for their job performance through coaching and discipline if necessary.
  • Ensure that all required supplies, tools, and appropriate safety equipment are on hand, readily available, and delivered precisely to the correct work site to maintain operational efficiency and safety compliance.
  • Develop a team environment, encompassing staff at all levels and expertise, that utilizes individual, site, and corporate strengths to meet daily business needs, solve problems, develop and implement long-term goals and objectives.
  • Liaise and align with various essential departments—such as maintenance, engineering, and EHS to ensure cohesive goals and synchronized priorities across the operation.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and occurrences immediately upon discovery and complete the required reports without delay to ensure prompt analysis and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Familiarize themselves with the specifics of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to ensure all supervisory actions and decisions promote fair and consistent labor relations in adherence to the established terms and conditions.
  • Follow established company procedures for reporting mechanical or electrical malfunctions and for ordering the appropriate maintenance support to minimize downtime and ensure operational safety, including inputting accurate work orders and closing out completed work orders.
  • Prioritize and direct mine mechanics and electricians to diagnose and repair equipment essential to ongoing mine operations, ensuring that critical machinery is returned to service efficiently and safely.
  • Ensure scheduled training is available and that all related documents are correctly filled out and submitted. Utilize a systematic approach combining clear communication, standardized procedures, and effective tracking.
