The Opportunity:
Reporting directly to the R&D Manager and Senior R&D Scientist, the R&D Scientist is an integral and highly valuable member of our client's technical team, focusing on antimicrobial and microbiology research and innovation. This role involves developing novel antimicrobial food solutions, collaborating with other research and development scientist, enhancing existing products and processes, and supporting technical sales and customer integration efforts.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Conduct research and development of novel antimicrobial and bacteria-based food and beverage ingredients.
- Develop new technologies and optimize existing product formulations and processes.
- Act as a subject matter expert in antimicrobial and microbiology applications, supporting technical and sales teams.
- Upon the requirement, participate in customer trials, providing technical field support and guidance.
- Prepare technical presentations for seminars, industry conferences, and customer meetings.
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of technical proposals of how customers can integrate and implement our client's Antimicrobials in their systems and equipment.
- Publish research findings and technical documents in peer-reviewed journals or industry platforms.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and competitive technologies in antimicrobial and microbiology fields.
- Collaborate with universities, technical institutes, and other centers of excellence.
- Assume the role and responsibilities of the Biosafety Officer and ensure permits are up-to-date; and lab is code-compliant.Provide biosafety training to other team members who be tasked with BSO duties.
- Interact within external and internal technical communities to assure access to latest technologies, scientific advances, required licenses, and regulations including cGMP, FDA, PHAC, CFIA, and HACCP compliance.
- Manage individual productivity to meet all productivity requirements and notify Chief Technical Officer of any problems or delays.
- Supervise junior staff or co-op students, ensuring training and performance goals are met.
- Maintain and calibrate lab equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and operational protocols.
- Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation, request repairs with CTO's approval.
- Recommend purchases for laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Participate in budgeting processes and resource planning for lab operations.
- May perform standard QC tests and ensure proper documentation.
- Travel for customer support, conferences, and field trials as needed.
What You'll Need to Be Successful:
- Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Microbiology, Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry.
- 4+ years of relevant industry experience, preferably in antimicrobial or microbiology-focused product development.
- Strong research background in microbiology, molecular science, and food stabilization technologies. Food Science background in hydrocolloids, protein chemistry, flavour chemistry, sensory science, ingredient interactions, food safety would be an asset.
- Experience in operating BSL-2 laboratory environments and adhering to good laboratory practices (GLP).
- Experience in conducting microbial challenge studies.
- Strong project management experience and skilled in developing new bacteria-based food technologies, novel ingredients, or foods, from discovery, development, to product launch phases.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience with HACCP, cGMP, PHAC, CFIA, and FDA compliance is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
