The Environmental Technician (Summer Student) is responsible for environmental sampling activities and associated data management responsibilities. They will report directly to the K'en T'em Environmental Services Manager on all matters pertaining to their employment, including technical issues and concerns, safety issues and concerns, quality assurance, and quality control. The Environmental Technician is expected to be reliable, selfdriven, autonomous, confident, and able to work proficiently in a supervised and unsupervised environment. The Environmental Technician is expected to conduct themselves ethically and respect others and is expected to apply an appropriate level of due diligence and care in all aspects of the work.
Primary Duties
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures,
- Work closely with clients to ensure regulatory requirements are met,
- Be responsible for implementing and supporting field crew in multiple, broad-based sampling and monitoring programs, collection of chemical, physical and biological tests (water, air, sediment) to confirm compliance and determine environmental conditions,
- Be responsible for the care, routine maintenance, repair, and calibration of monitoring and sample collection equipment and instrumentation,
- Maintain supplies inventory checklist and order supplies as required,
- Carry out environmental data entry, review, and management, Liaise with clients for the purposes of facilitating compliance assurance, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Reporting Supervisor/Designate.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work productively with minimal supervision,
- Ability to work independently in remote locations and outside in inclement weather conditions,
- Ability to carry equipment (up to 50 lb),
- Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and manage time effectively,
- Ability to supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as: hard hats, protective eyewear, high visibility vests, steel-toe boots, and chest waders,
- Ability to successfully pass a 3-panel drug and alcohol test, as required throughout employment, to meet project requirements,
- Familiarity with working in an industrial setting is considered an asset,
- Knowledge of relevant environmental and waste legislation, standards, and effective industry practices (BC Field Sampling Handbook, BC Hydrometric Standards) is considered an asset,
- Previous work with Indigenous government or organizations is considered an asset, and
- Willingness to learn beginner nłeʔkepmxcín, nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity.
Experience and Requirements
- Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in an environmental field is considered an asset (Natural Resource Post-Secondary, Sciences, Geography, Geology, Forestry, etc.),
- Experience in environmental monitoring is considered an asset,
- Experience with environmental data management software (GIS/EQuIS) and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is considered an asset,
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with the ability to safely operate equipment, i.e. 4x4 trucks, boats, augers, snowmobiles, etc., and
- Minimum age of 18, in accordance with the Mines Act 3.2.1.
