Opportunity

The Pathways to Education Program is a national program, operating in 31 communities across Canada and provides a comprehensive set of academic, social, financial, and individual supports to youth.

The Academic Program Facilitator (APF) plays a leadership role in the delivery of the Pathways to Education tutoring program across multiple sites. The APF is responsible for ensuring that tutoring spaces are safe, inclusive, and well-organized, while also supporting the smooth and effective operation of all sessions. Key responsibilities include enhancing and implementing the academic curriculum; organizing resources; coordinating site logistics and schedules; and ensuring that learning opportunities are accessible, engaging, and impactful for all participants.

A core aspect of this role is providing direct support to youth participants, fostering a positive and supportive environment where they feel valued and encouraged to thrive both academically and personally. The APF is also actively involved in overseeing volunteers, providing guidance, and mentoring.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in facilitating educational spaces, group programs for youth, and a strong ability to engage diverse communities, including Indigenous, newcomer, and LGBTQ2S+ youth. This position reports to the Volunteer and Programming Coordinator of the Pathways to Education Program.

This position requires travel within the community. Working hours include late afternoons and evenings (Monday to Thursday 1:00 to 9:00 pm, Fridays flexible).

Responsibilities

• Youth engagement:
• Create a welcoming and safe space for all participants by finding creative ways to ensure all youth feel valued and included.
• Inclusive Resources: adapt, purchase and maintain a variety of resources to ensure that the program meet everyone's needs.
• Support Personal Growth by facilitating the individual, social, and educational growth of participants to help them reach their full potential, while fostering group cohesion
• Administrative Tasks:
• Develop Tutoring Strategies: create and refine tutoring strategies and resources tailored to different learning styles, abilities, and needs.
• Track Attendance: collect attendance data for each academic support session and input it into the Pathways database regularly.
• Record Volunteer Hours: log volunteer hours into a dedicated tracking spreadsheet.
• Submit Tutoring Summary Reports: complete and submit a brief tutoring summary after each session including key observations, challenges, and successes. Upload report into Teams folder.
• Manage Supplies: purchase snacks and materials as needed, ensuring purchases remain within the allocated budget.
• Group facilitation:
• Establish Program Routines: maintain program structures, routines and expectations.
• Plan Special Events: organize guest speakers, special events, and field trips by joining mentoring committees and collaborating with other staff.
• Community relations: build and sustain partnerships with community organizations and school personnel to enhance the program.
• Support volunteer tutors:
• Provide guidance and support to volunteers in engaging with youth, including conversation starters and socialization strategies.
• Monitor student engagement and the quality of volunteer-student interactions. Offer redirection and support as needed to ensure students' needs are addressed. Model effective tutoring techniques.
• Track volunteer hours consistently.
• Liaise with program staff
• Join Mentoring planning groups to support strategies for improving/strengthening participation in mentoring
• Report on students' strengths, needs and challenges to appropriate staff members

Qualifications

• B.A. or B.Ed. or relevant Bachelor's degree (Social Work, Child and Youth Care, etc.) and/or a combination of relevant post-secondary education and/or a minimum of 2 years' experience in youth-specific group facilitation and mentoring culturally diverse groups
• Criminal records check including the vulnerable sector
• Basic First Aid certification (OFA Level 1)

Additional Assets

• Experience working in programs supporting the educational success of youth
• Experience and/or knowledge of working with the public school system (grade 8 -12)
• Specific training and/or experience with youth with additional learning needs and/or new language learners
• Strong experience in delivering academic programming within a community-driven environment
• Experience working with youth and families in the DTES/Vancouver/Strathcona neighbourhoods
• Experience working with volunteers, including coaching and developing resources
• Knowledge of community and social services
• Understanding of impact of poverty, racism, oppression and the impact of settlement journey
• Indigenous background
• Proficiency in additional languages
