Parks, Greenspace, and Sportsplex Operator

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Parks and Greenspace Working Foreman, or their designate, the Parks, GreenspaceSportsplex Operator performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, development, and operation of parks, trails, sports fields, playgrounds, cemeteries, and other outdoor municipal spaces.
This position operates and maintains light equipment, performs groundskeeping and facility support work, and contributes to the safe, efficient, and high-quality maintenance of municipal outdoor spaces. The incumbent may also provide operational support within the Sportsplex facility as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Perform daily maintenance and minor repairs in parks, playgrounds, and green spaces;
- Coordinate and carry out trail work (walking pathways and mountain bike trails) including maintenance, rehabilitation, and support design and development of new trails including, but not limited to walking and mountain bike trails;
- Perform and coordinate maintenance duties within in the parks, municipal campground, and cemeteries;
- Operate a wide variety of powered and light equipment such as tractor, skid steer, ice resurface equipment, track dumper, mowers, rototillers, aerators, de-thatcher, chainsaw, etc.;
- Support the coordination and implementation of invasive species management program;
Maintain and support operations across turf and field assets, including:
Performing turf management and maintenance for ballfields, soccer fields, and general park turf areas (mowing, aerating, topdressing, seeding, and fertilizing);
- Conducting ball diamond maintenance, including infield grooming, edging, line marking, and base placement;
- Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems to ensure optimal watering and efficiency;
- Performing tree and trail work, including pruning, hazard tree identification; chainsaw operations, trail surface repair, and clearing debris;
Collaborating with horticultural staff as needed to support garden and tree care activities.
Identify workplace and environment hazards and take corrective measures and report to the Working Foreman;
- Perform manual and physically demanding work including but not limited to; trail construction and maintenance, snow removal, landscaping etc;
- Assist with cost estimates and material planning for in-house and contractor parks projects;
- Support Ice maintenance (operating machinery) and cleaning operations within the Sportsplex during the winter season;
- Follow and promote safe work procedures and practices for park operations and job sites in accordance with WorkSafeBC and City policies;
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints courteously, ensuring issues are addressed or referred appropriately;
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports related to daily operations;
- Participate in standby, shift work, and emergency call-outs as required;
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support department goals and service delivery.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Degree or diploma in horticulture or turf management from a recognized institution or an equivalent combination of training and experience in a similar field;
- Demonstrated knowledge of horticultural theory, turf management practices and grounds maintenance procedures;
- Experience in trail building and maintenance;
- Thorough knowledge of methods, techniques and the use of materials, tools and equipment used in arboriculture preferred;
- Ability to interpret landscape drawings, layouts and contour maps is an asset;
- Experience with turf management;
- Skilled in operating and maintaining landscaping and light equipment;
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public, while providing efficient customer service;
- Physically fit and capable of performing heavy manual labour in outdoor or indoor environments;
- Certifications preferred or ability to obtain;
- Building Service Worker Level 1
- ParksSports Field Operator Level 1
- Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor Certificate
- Pesticide Applicator Certificate (Landscape Management)
- Emergency First Aid Level 1
- Must be fit tested and compliant with WorkSafeBC respirator protection requirements;
- Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence;
