Job Title: Internal Auditor - Contract

Job Description

This position starts as a four-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension due to existing staffing needs. The primary responsibility is to execute an audit plan previously drafted by an external consultant. This role involves overseeing two junior auditors and aims to bring a fresh perspective to internal auditing, fostering a partnership approach and building connections with Enterprise Risk Management.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and complete the fiscal 2024 internal audit plan in a timely manner.
  • Conduct research to develop recommendations for the future structure of internal auditing.
  • Develop and document an 'Internal Audit Plan Development Process', ensuring alignment with best practices.
  • Contribute to the development of the internal audit plan for 2025/2026, to be approved by the Board in May.
  • Research and frame the existing Internal Audit report while ensuring alignment with leading practices.
  • Implement the annual internal audit plan, including conducting investigations or audits as needed.
  • Conduct routine transaction audits using ACL software.
  • Support investigations under the Public Interest Disclosure Act and the whistleblower policy.
  • Assist in updating the safe disclosure policy.

Essential Skills

  • A minimum of 2 years of audit experience with a strong understanding of audit methodology and approach.
  • Proficient in understanding internal controls and regulatory awareness.
  • Excellent written communication skills for report writing.
  • Strong spoken communication skills for engaging with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with public sector audits, either from industry or public practice.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Designated CPA or CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) is a plus.
  • Experience within the higher education sector is desirable.
  • Exposure to or experience with risk management.
  • Experience in developing audit plans or audit programs/templates.
  • Experience with investigations.

Work Environment

The position offers a hybrid work schedule, with 2 to 3 days on-site. Working hours are Monday through Friday, starting at approximately 8:30 AM, totaling a 36-hour week. The role reports directly to the Internal Auditor and involves collaboration with the Senior Internal Auditor and other stakeholders on campus. The work environment is supportive, with a friendly and helpful Senior Internal Auditor who is a long-term employee. The dress code is business casual, and the site is transit accessible with self-paid parking available.
