KEY FUNCTION:

Provide education programs offered by the Centre for Prehospital Care and perform medical certification activities within assigned geographical areas.

REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Regional Education and Certification Coordinator, Centre for Prehospital Care.

DUTIES:

  • Ensure the efficient, effective, and timely delivery of paramedic initial certification, recertification, continuing medical education, and remedial education programs.

  • Implement education sessions regarding Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS/ALS) skills and knowledge.

  • Develop individual learning activities for those paramedics requiring enhanced learning opportunities, and support, follow-up, and assess learning outcomes once completed.

  • Coordinate HSN's clinical activites for Primary and/or Advanced Care Paramedics as per established hospital agreements, and directly supervise most clinical activities.

  • Develop and submit documentation and progress forms in accordance with directed timeline requirements as per program policy and procedures.

  • Design and deliver content for instruction, certification, and re-certification under the authority of the Medical Director in symptom relief, defibrillation, and ALS skills to new and existing paramedics.

  • Utilize low and medium fidelity simulation tools in education and competancy assessments.

  • Participate in educational research initiatives and oversee data collection and distribution for approved educational research programs.

  • Conduct ride-outs with the emergency medical services in their designated region for the purpose of competancy assessment and performance improvement education, and preceptorship; provide documentation of findings and follow-up with concerns.

  • Deliver and attend instructor training sessions, staff meetings, and other meetings as required.

  • Participate in the development and review of policies and procedures for the Centre for Prehospital Care.

  • Act as a regional resource and liasion for paramedics, middle and senior leadership of designated ambulance services, and allied health care and emergency agencies regarding pre-hospital health care, administrative policies, and procedures, protocols, paramedic training, certification, and patient care.

  • Maintain current and accurate information regarding all aspects of paramedics' education, including the training delivered, course evaluation, and quality improvement review and outcomes.

  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.

  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.

  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.

  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.

  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.

  • Represent the department or program on various committees locally and provincially and in meetings as required.

  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in a Primary, Advanced, or Critical Care Paramedic field, from an accredited college.

  • Current National Association of EMS Educators Certificate (NAEMSEC) is preferred.

  • Current Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR) Certification in NCIT Basic or Specialized is preferred.

  • Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience working in advanced clinical practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in adult education is preferred.

  • Experience in Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCE) utilizing the Global Rating Scale (GRS) scoring system is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and legislation pertaining to the delivery of pre-hospital care and emergency health services.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association's (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.

  • Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, and coaching skills.

  • Demonstrated excellent presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.

  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.

  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.

  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.

PERSONAL SUITABILITY:

  • Willingness to travel regularly within Northern Ontario and occasionally elsewhere in the province.

  • Valid driver's license with access to reliable vehicle.

  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and patients.

  • Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
