Recreation & Active Well-being includes facilities, programming, and services that promote emotional, mental, physical, social and overall wellbeing through the participation in active living. Recreation also offers experiential experiences for students through our many leadership opportunities. Participation in recreation improves the quality of life and helps to develop a thriving lifestyle for students, staff and faculty during their time on campus and throughout their lives.
ResponsibilitiesPurpose of Role:
Intramural Sports Ice Hockey Officials are responsible for creating an inviting atmosphere in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Officials must have strong interpersonal and communication skills their main responsibility is to implement the Intramural Sports policies and playing rules in order to ensure an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety. Officials serve as ambassadors of safe play by modelling a positive attitude on-site and good sportsmanship, and always be striving to improve their officiating skills. The Intramural Sports Ice Hockey Officials will be a key contributor in cultivating a sense of community amongst participants that is supportive of building a thriving and equitable campus. This role will support the University's mission to build an equitable and thriving campus by fostering inclusivity and ensuring the space and games held in those spaces meet the holistic needs of the community.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for officiating, supervising ice hockey games in compliance with Intramural rules and policies for all assigned Intramural ice hockey leagues, activities, tournaments and special events.
- Responsible for collecting sport bags, helping with set up and take down of all equipment (if necessary) for all assigned Intramural ice hockey leagues, activities, tournaments and special events.
- Responsible for signing in and clearing all participants from the arena facilities at the end of games (if necessary) for all assigned Intramural ice hockey leagues, activities, tournaments and special events.
- Responsible for maintaining the safety for all assigned Intramural ice hockey leagues, activities, tournaments and special events.
- Work in cooperation with the Intramural Coordinator, Intramural Team Leaders and Intramural Conveners.
- Act as a front-line ambassador for the Intramural program while officiating and interacting with participants.
Minimum Qualifications:
- First Aid & CPR certification required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated strong customer service, problem-solving and interpersonal skills are required.
- Ideal Intramural Sports Ice Hockey Officials are experienced in ice hockey refereeing, with sincere interest in recreational sporting activities and who have a strong knowledge of Campus Recreation's programs, services, and facilities.
- Must be a full time student at Western (enrolled in minimum 3.5 courses), and expect to retain full-time student status for the duration of this appointment
Experience:
- Prior experience or training in Ice Hockey is preferred but not required.
Additional Important Information:
- Applicant Interviews: Ongoing Zoom interviews between Monday, June 1st, 2026 and Sunday, September 13th, 2026.
- Mandatory Availability - Fall/Winter staff training: On Zoom Thursday, September 17th, :30-9:00pm) & in-person Sunday, September 20th, 2026 (time TBA).
- Sports available for officiating: ICE HOCKEY.
