Job Synopsis
The Volunteer Engagement Manager leads MCC Ontario's Volunteer Strategy at the thrift shop, including recruitment and orientation of new Thrift volunteers, and ongoing support, coaching, and training for volunteers in their various roles. This salaried full-time position will interact directly with 150 volunteers, leading the efforts of volunteer communication and recognition.
This leadership role is a balance of administrative, and people work. The Volunteer Manager will have daily interactions with staff, volunteers, customers, and donors, as well as time at the computer to plan, recruit and process applications, and maintain volunteer records in the database.
Thrift and Gift seeks to be a friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God's creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of this and other MCCO Thrift Shops.
MCC is a charitable organization that partners with churches and community organizations worldwide to walk with people who are disadvantaged. MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence. As an internationally recognized NGO, MCC currently serves in more than 45 countries with over 475 partners, 1,000 staff and 40,000 volunteers.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of their employment. Successful candidates will be required to complete a Police Records Check upon hire.

Volunteer Management & Customer Service:
- Proven success in volunteer management – recruiting, leading, training, evaluation, appreciation.
- Experience with volunteer management software e.g. Volgistics.
- Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds, and a demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse experiences and life situations.
- The ability to engage volunteers in creating a positive, customer centric, welcoming atmosphere within the shop, balancing patience, creativity, humour, and energy.
- Ability to engage and influence others to achieve organizational goals.
- Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions
- Valid 'G' Ontario driver's license
- Criminal records check (required upon hire)
- Legally able to work in Canada
Communication:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to communicate and enforce policies.
- Ability to relate well and communicate effectively with volunteers, staff, the public, and volunteer groups of all ages and backgrounds through a variety of methods. e.g. in-person, email, newsletters.
- Able to effectively deal with conflict in all areas of the shop (staff, volunteers, donors, customers).
General:
- College Diploma or above in a relevant field (or equivalent education and training) and 2 to 4 years of related experience.
- Commitment to the operating principles of MCC Thrift and the values of MCC including a heart for justice and active peacemaking.
- Intermediate working knowledge of MS Office programs including Excel, Outlook, Word, and general comfort with computers. Ability to learn and adopt new software.
- Required to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
- Able to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- Ability to ascend and descend stairs carrying 25 lbs.
- Able to spend 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
- Able to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
- Ability to travel easily within town that the Shop is in and surrounding area to visit potential partners and pick up supplies.

- Awareness of second-hand market operations and trends
- Knowledge of antiques, collectibles, and brand recognition
Key Responsibilities
General
- Implement the provided strategies for volunteer recruitment and retention, using the resources provided by the MCC Ontario Volunteer Services Manager.
- Strategize to meet the volunteer needs of the Shop as communicated by the Managers, Team Members, and Volunteer Ambassador Council.
- Manage the life cycle of volunteers – recruitment, orientation, training, check-ins, recognition, care, exit interviews.
- Work side-by-side with volunteers as they perform their roles, with a goal of creating rapport, assessing fit, and providing ongoing training / development.
- Organize and facilitate Volunteer Ambassador Council. (Will require recruitment and creation in the first year).
- Provide support and coaching for staff directly related to their daily volunteer oversight, equipping them to work effectively and cooperatively with volunteers.
- Regularly communicate with volunteers through conversation, in-shop communication, emails, and newsletters to keep them informed of policies, procedures, and events.
- In partnership with the General Manager, actively network with schools, churches, community and local organizations to promote volunteerism and build foundational relationships for the thrift shop.
- Host volunteer groups.
- Organize information sessions between MCC Ontario staff and volunteers.
- Collect volunteer feedback and impact stories, using it to improve systems and inspire others.
- Maintain up to date and accurate volunteer records in the database.
- Participate in network opportunities with other Volunteer Managers, led by the MCCO Volunteer Services Manager.
- Ensure the volunteer break room is clean, tidy, and well stocked.
- Respond to customer, donor, and volunteer questions or concerns as needed
- Provide back-up support for other staff including opening and closing of shop (cash registers, daily reconciliations, etc.) when other staff are not available.
Health & Safety
- Proactively support volunteers with reminders of proper lifting techniques, and the provision of tools to help with heavy lifting.
- Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization.
- Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards.
Other
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
- Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, Peace Conference and Staff Development Day
- Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others
- Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
- Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
- Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public.

Salary Details
Base salary: $50,634. This role starts on day 1 with a company paid benefit package
