About The Role:
Reporting to the Recreation and Culture Supervisor, this position involves a variety of tasks related to the Recreation Centre reception and delivery of front-line services.
The successful candidate will work casual hours including days, evenings, and weekends, both scheduled and on an on-call basis. As this is a casual position, hours of work are not guaranteed.
Key responsibilities include:
- Greeting the public and assisting user groups.
- Responding to telephone and in-person inquiries.
- Assisting the public with program information and registrations.
- Preparation of facility spaces for programming and events.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, instructors, the general public, user groups and program participants.
Proficiency in the use of computer applications including Microsoft Office suite and recreation-related software.
Organizational skills and the ability to prepare and maintain records, reports and correspondence.
Ability to work shift work including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
One year certificate in recreation or related field.
6 months of recent and relevant experience.
Licensing and Assessment Criteria
Criminal record clearance.
WHIMIS Certification
Current First Aid- Basic (formerly OFA Level 1)
Shifts are scheduled Monday to Friday from 6:45am–2:30pm and 2:15–9:30pm, and weekends from 8:45am–4:45pm. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to work all listed shifts, with a strong preference for candidates available for afternoon/evening shifts (2:15–9:30pm) and weekends.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Recreation and Culture Clerk I is responsible for a variety of tasks related to the Recreation Centre reception and delivery of front line services in the Recreation and Culture section of the Parks and Recreation Department.
SCOPE
Reporting to the Recreation and Culture Supervisor, the Recreation and Culture Clerk I is responsible for performing reception and telephone duties; processing payments, answering public inquiries, and supporting program delivery, registration, marketing and special events.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as the primary first point of contact and perform customer service and reception duties including, but not limited to, greeting the public and assisting user groups, responding to telephone and in-person inquiries, program registration, and responding to email and recreation department correspondence.
Respond to information requests in a diligent, efficient, professional and service oriented manner; discerning nature of the inquiry and providing appropriate referrals.
Operate cash/point of sale system, including receiving and processing payments, preparing cash receipt entries for deposit and ensuring transactions and end-of-day cash balancing are completed accurately.
Assist with the delivery of recreation and cultural programs and services, including but not limited to tracking of program registration, class lists, attendance lists, and evaluation forms,
Assist in the preparation and distribution of marketing materials for recreation programs and events
Ensure facility rules and safety policies are adhered to; responds to accidents and incidents taking appropriate action when necessary.
Maintain a high degree of cleanliness in Parks, Recreation and Culture Department facilities, including performing light janitorial duties.
Perform the set-up/take-down of equipment for recreation programs and special events when required.
Make routine equipment checks and reports any problems to supervisor.
Opens various Parks, Recreation and Culture facilities and prepares them for use by the public.
Secure Recreation and Culture facilities for the prevention of theft and vandalism.
Perform clerical tasks in support of the Parks and Recreation Department
Orient new staff to the Parks and Recreation Department.
Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of Grade 12, a one-year certificate in recreation or related field, and 6 months' recent (within the last 5 years), relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHIMIS) certificate.
- Current First Aid – Emergency First Aid with Level A CPR.
- Current criminal record clearance
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, instructors, general public, government agencies, user groups and program participants.
- Demonstrated high level of focus on internal and external client service continuously seeking ways to meet and exceed expectations.
- Demonstrated novice level proficiency in the use of computer applications including the Microsoft Office suite and recreation-related software
- Effective organizational skills and the ability to prepare and maintain records, reports, correspondence and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) in a wide variety of situations applying diplomacy and interpersonal skill to establish and maintain productive relationships.
- Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design platforms.
- Knowledge recreation and culture event and program planning and marketing strategies.
- Demonstrated initiative without specific direction; completing tasks by removing barriers and locating necessary resources.
- Good working knowledge of the local community.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cash handling procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the operation of a variety of equipment used in a recreation setting (i.e. audio/visual, recreation equipment).
OTHER:
- Ability to work shift work including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
