The Annex is a standout restaurant and bar in Inverness, Nova Scotia; a seaside town on the western side of Cape Breton Island. A gem set in an unbeatable location, The Annex overlooks Inverness Harbour and Cabot Links golf course with stunning sunset views of the Northumberland Strait. We take pride in being a favourite dining destination for many in Cape Breton, and have been a finalist in the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia's "Best Restaurant – Cape Breton" for three of our four years in operation, winning the title in 2025.

The Annex serves delicious scratch food highlighting local products in novel but approachable ways; elevated comfort food with plenty of opportunities to showcase the area's fresh seafood and produce is where our menu shines brightest. Warm, knowledgeable service, consistent, top-quality food and drink, and a beautiful dining room with one of the best views on the coast create an unforgettable dining experience that's both special and homelike for our guests.

The restaurant's dining room seats 40 at table and an additional 10 around our social bar. Our spacious deck offers the opportunity to extend service to up to an additional 75 guests in good weather, typically June through September. Finally, our fully-licensed lawn space provides a memorable setting for drinks, small bites, and larger-scale special events. The Annex is a warm, welcoming space with a focus on noteworthy quality that carries throughout the entire guest experience.

The restaurant is looking for multiple individuals to fill the position of Server at The Annex. This role is central to guests' experience and the overall atmosphere at The Annex.

Ideal candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills and thrive in a busy environment. They will be detail-oriented and take seriously their responsibility to provide knowledgeable service connecting guests to their best dining experience. In this, they will also recognize opportunities to create sales that will enhance this experience.

The restaurant is hiring for multiple Server roles through our high season, which ends in October. Start dates are available April through September.

Inverness, Nova Scotia is a rural town of about 1,300 people on the west coast of Cape Breton Island. A vibrant summertime destination for many, the area hosts gorgeous sandy beaches with the warmest Atlantic waters north of the Carolinas, innumerable hiking trails, a strong home-grown music culture, and is home to the globally-ranked golf courses of Cabot Cape Breton. In winter, the area quiets down significantly, making time for community building, sitting by the fire, card playing, and winter-sports (including over 1000km of snowmobiling trails). The area is ideal for individuals and families who enjoy outdoor activities and nature.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality, timely, warm and welcoming service to guests

  • Retain detailed knowledge about the restaurant's food and drink menus

  • Make appropriate recommendations to guests based on conversational approach to serving

  • Communicate clearly and accurately to the bar and kitchen throughout service, particularly in POS order entries

  • Identify and act upon upselling opportunities that will enhance a guest's dining experience with The Annex

  • Contribute to the service of all guests in the restaurant, developing a holistic eye for the needs of all guests, regardless of whether acting as lead server for the table

  • Process cash and credit card transactions accurately following appropriate procedures

  • Maintain cleanliness, beauty, and organization of all guest-facing spaces

  • Contribute to inventory management and regular supplies ordering

  • Maintain an organized, prepared, and clean work area

  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for guests and team in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety and WHMIS guidelines

  • Carry out all tasks with attention to detail, cleanliness, and safety

  • Adhere to all local and national liquor laws

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Ability to work well a team-environment towards common goals is an absolute must

  • Gregarious personality with strong customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work in an energetic and demanding work environment without sacrificing quality of service

  • Demonstrated serving experience

  • Detail-oriented approach to work
