Indigenous Relations Specialist - Revelstoke

Number of positions: 1 Job Location: Revelstoke DO

What you'll do

As a professional member of the Indigenous Relations Team, provides specialized expertise in building and maintaining

ongoing First Nations relationships and advancing reconciliation, facilitating the resolution of conflict, and ensuring duty to

consult and related regulatory processes are met.

  • Serve as BC Hydro's primary Revelstoke Dam on-site liaison with First Nations to support the implementation,

compliance, and annual continual improvement of construction and operational management plans.

  • Serve as the primary liaison between BC Hydro, First Nations, contractors, and stakeholders to foster respectful

relationships, promote cultural understanding, share information, and resolve issues related to project commitments

involving First Nations.

  • Coordinate site access, safety training, orientation, and credential verification for First Nations representatives and

arrange and provide site tours as requested by different First Nations

  • Draft and distribute communications from BC Hydro on all reporting requirements stipulated in the final management

plans.

  • Gather input from First Nations, consult on changes, and ensure approved updates are submitted to appropriate agencies

and parties.

  • Organize cultural sensitivity training for site workers and support integration of Indigenous knowledge into restoration and

environmental practices.

  • Track engagement activities, prepare annual reports summarizing outcomes, and provide timely, culturally appropriate

information to First Nations.

  • Participates in the research, assessment and development of business strategies pertaining to Indigenous Relations, and

advancement of Indigenous cultural practices opportunities.

  • Identify and analyze issues and develops options for consideration by senior managers.

  • Facilitate data collection and feedback incorporation for management plans; assist with reporting to BC Hydro and

Environmental Assessment Office

  • Provide forums for collaborative problem-solving and plan effectiveness reviews.

  • Evaluates source and scope of complex situations that may occur during consultation stages and identifies options and

alternatives for finding resolution while balancing cultural, territorial, and other considerations.

  • As the first point of contact for concerns from First Nations or project teams, demonstrates advanced knowledge of

relationship management, applying persuasive influence and negotiation, and building and maintaining trust, resolving

issues or escalating as needed.

  • As a technical specialist and leader in First Nation engagement, this position is viewed and accessed by a wide range of

operational areas within BC Hydro to support, intervene in and resolve actual or potential conflicts between BC Hydro

interests and First Nation communities

What you bring

  • University Undergraduate degree in First Nations Studies, Public Administration, political science, land and resource

management, law, anthropology or related discipline or equivalent.

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a business environment (public or private sector, preferably resource-

based organization).

  • Subject matter expertise in First Nation relationship-building, consultation and engagement, including proven experience

working with Indigenous Peoples to advance projects and initiatives.

Preferences will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience on construction or industrial projects.
  • Experience with environmental assessment and preparing provincial and federal regulatory applications and First Nation

consultation requirements for capital projects.
