Position Summary

The Urban Indigenous Wellness & Cultural Programs Lead plays a key role in fostering community wellness through culturally safe supports, advocacy, program coordination, and ceremony facilitation. This position connects Urban Indigenous community members to culturally appropriate services, therapy, counselling, traditional healing, and cultural connections, while also leading or assisting with ceremonies, cultural workshops, and community events.

In addition to direct support, the Lead will coordinate and deliver cultural and wellness programming, strengthen relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and service providers, and represent Slaxin Lelum in community engagement activities, meetings, and outreach events. This role requires strong cultural knowledge, excellent relationship-building skills, and a deep understanding of the experiences of Urban Indigenous peoples from diverse Nations across Turtle Island.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or assist with cultural programs, workshops, and ceremonies at Slaxin Lelum.
  • Work collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Cultural Advisors to ensure cultural programming is authentic and respectful.
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate wellness and cultural programming, including land-based healing activities and seasonal ceremonies.
  • Build trust-based relationships with Urban Indigenous community members.
  • Provide one-on-one guidance and culturally safe referrals to wellness, counselling, or traditional healing supports.
  • Support clients in navigating mainstream and Indigenous-specific health or social services.
  • Represent Slaxin Lelum at community events, partner meetings, and engagement sessions.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations to expand wellness and cultural programming.
  • Advocate for culturally safe and respectful service delivery for Urban Indigenous clients.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client and program records.
  • Contribute to program evaluation, funding reports, and strategic planning.
  • Participate in team meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Required:

  • This position is restricted to applicants of Indigenous ancestry under Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in an Indigenous cultural, wellness, or program coordination role.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and healing practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, facilitate, or support cultural programs, workshops, and ceremonies.
  • Experience working with Urban Indigenous peoples from diverse Nations and backgrounds.

Assets:

  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, social work, community wellness, or a related field.
  • Indigenous language knowledge.
  • Established relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous organizations in Metro Vancouver.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based with frequent community outreach.
  • Regular evenings/weekends for cultural programs or events.
  • Ability to travel within Metro Vancouver as required.

Compensation – 5 Step Wage Grid

Hours per week: 37.5 | Hourly Salary Range: $29.50 – $36.00
