Controller – Construction Industry

An established organization in the construction industry is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee its financial operations and support the company through its next phase of growth. This role is being recruited confidentially to ensure a smooth and discreet transition.
About the Role
The Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, and operational finance activities. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in the construction industry and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
You will play a key role in optimizing financial processes, improving reporting accuracy, and supporting the organization as it evaluates and transitions to a new accounting software system.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee full-cycle accounting, month-end, and year-end processes
- Prepare accurate financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses
- Manage job costing, project accounting, and WIP reporting
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls and compliance processes
- Lead the transition from QuickBooks to a more robust accounting system
- Partner with operations and project managers to provide financial insights
- Manage and mentor accounting staff
- Liaise with external auditors, financial institutions, and partners
Qualifications
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting role
- Construction industry experience is mandatory
- Strong understanding of job costing, contracts, WIP, and project-based reporting
- Experience working with QuickBooks and comfort with transitioning to new software platforms
- CPA designation is an asset but not required
- Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills
- Ability to work onsite in Markham (Highway 400 & Elgin Mills area)
Compensation
Total compensation ranges from $125,000 to $175,000, including bonuses, depending on experience.
