Our Corporate Services Department has a rare opportunity for a Freedom of Information Specialist to join its dynamic team. Reporting to the Records and Information Administrator, the Freedom of Information Specialist is responsible for the administration of the Freedom of Information (FOI) program under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). An incumbent also assists with Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA); assists with the review, development, and implementation of policies and procedures related to FOI and PIA. An incumbent acts in an advisory capacity to management and staff and exercises a high degree of judgment regarding difficult, high-profile, sensitive, complex, and confidential issues. Performs related work as required.

You're an independent self-starter who can confidently apply knowledge and judgement in complex situations. You have no issues with making data-driven decisions and can explain and defend your assessments. Because you'll be interacting with a variety of people both within your department and within the City of Burnaby, it's important that you're a strong communicator, both verbally and written, with a diplomatic mindset. You're adaptable, know how to prioritize your workload, and pay close attention to details.

In this role, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to; responding to requests for information under FIPPA; assisting with drafting and reviewing PIA's; advising and guiding departments on matters related to FOI; providing direction and assigning less complex or routine FOI requests; developing and implementing policies and procedures related to FOI and PIA; preparing written material such as correspondence, reports, metrics, and fee assessments; receiving and tracking information requests to completion.

Qualifications include a University degree in public administration, law or a related discipline and 5 + years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. You should have considerable knowledge of the: Local Government Act, Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (FIPPA), City Bylaws, policies and regulations governing the work.
