Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated Information Security Co-op Student to join our IT Security team for a 16-week term. This role is ideal for students currently enrolled in RRC Polytech's Information Security program who want hands-on experience in security operations, incident response, threat analysis, and cybersecurity governance.
As a co-op student, you will work closely with our Cyber Security Specialist and IT teams, gaining exposure to real enterprise environments while contributing to day-to-day operational security activities.

The successful candidate's responsibilities will include:

Security Operations Support

You will assist with:

  • Monitoring alerts in Sophos Central and other security platforms.

  • Reviewing suspicious emails and learning how to identify phishing attempts.

  • Supporting initial investigations of security incidents (malware alerts, phishing attempts, access anomalies).

  • Checking for risky sign-ins, MFA enforcement, and basic access validation.

  • Assisting with requirements gathering for security reviews of new software requests.

  • Helping with configuration cleanup tasks across platforms such as Sophos, Azure AD, Zscaler, and Exchange.

Vulnerability Management & Monitoring
  • Reviewing vulnerability scan results and helping organize findings into actionable steps.

  • Participating in Zscaler ZIA testing, troubleshooting, and documentation efforts.

Security Awareness & Training
  • Helping administer phishing simulation campaigns.

  • Assisting with creation of phishing templates or cybersecurity awareness materials.

  • Supporting presentations or communications for Cybersecurity Awareness Month and other initiatives.

Governance, Risk & Compliance
  • Assisting with updates to cybersecurity standards, playbooks, and procedures.

  • Supporting review and editing of documents such as:

    • Business Continuity Plan (BCP)

    • Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP)

    • Cyber Incident Response Plan (CIRP)

  • Helping communicate security updates across the organization.

Collaboration & Learning
  • Shadowing senior team members during incident response activities.

  • Working with IT infrastructure, applications, and cloud teams.

  • Researching emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and best practices.

What You Will Learn
  • How enterprise security tools (Sophos, Defender, Zscaler, Azure AD) are used in real operations.

  • Practical threat detection and response skills.

  • Vulnerability scanning and remediation processes.

  • Identity and Access Management fundamentals.

  • How policy, governance, and technical controls operate in a corporate environment.

  • How security integrates into IT operations and business processes.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in RRC Polytech's Information Security program or a related cybersecurity program.

  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.

  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

  • Interest in cybersecurity operations, incident response, and cloud security.

Assets (Not Required):

  • Familiarity with Microsoft enterprise tools (Azure AD, Defender, Exchange, Intune).

  • Exposure to phishing tools or awareness training platforms.

  • Basic scripting ability (PowerShell).

Additional Information
  • Term Length: 16 weeks (e.g., January 5–May 1, 2026; flexible start date available).

  • Schedule: Full-time (37.5 hours/week).

  • Location: Winnipeg
