Howard C. Cohen and Associates is a boutique law firm in downtown Toronto that practices criminal and civil litigation. We are looking for a Paralegal to assist our lawyers and provide support in the office's overall running. You would also make administrative court appearances, especially for criminal matters, as needed.

This is an ideal position for someone at the start of their career in law and is eager to learn more about the profession. Regardless of your experience in law, we are looking for someone who is service-oriented, reliable, and can work well with a team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend "speak-to" court for administrative appearances in criminal matters
  • Schedule Crown Pre-Trials, Judicial Pre-Trials, and court appearances
  • File materials with the court through the JSO and OCPP websites
  • Answer incoming calls and respond to callers' inquiries in a positive, professional manner
  • Redirect calls as appropriate and take clear, concise messages when required
  • Greet and assist clients and visitors
  • Take care of and stamp all mail received and distribute
  • Prepare mail/packages and arrange courier pick-up
  • Transcribe dictation from Senior Lawyer as needed
  • Arrange schedules and bookings
  • Order supplies as needed
  • Correspond with and liaise between the lawyers, other staff, and clients
  • Review and proofread outgoing documents and correspondence
  • Organize workflow and initiate follow-up action promptly to meet multiple deadlines
  • File and maintain electronic and paper documentation using the office filing system and procedures
  • Legal research as required
  • Draft, assemble, and review documentation and/or applications
  • Administrative work on an ongoing basis or as needed
  • Willing and eager to work collaboratively and individually

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a P1 license or be in the process of applying for a P1 license
  • Previous experience as a paralegal is an asset but not required
  • Previous experience in the service industry, even if outside of law, is an asset but not required
  • Proficiency with PC Law and billing procedures is an asset

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency with PC Law and billing procedures is an asset
  • Strong client service focus and interpersonal skills
  • Positive attitude with commitment to supporting a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English
  • Ability to organize, multitask and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • High technical competency and skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Adobe Software.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner
