Position Hours: 30 hours per week, Monday – Saturday, daytime hours (8 am – 5 pm) On-call for emergencies alternating weekends and when TH Director is away (see Article 14.7 Standby Provisions from BCGEU collective agreement)

Level/Salary Range: $29.17 – 33.49/hour (JJEP Wage Grid Level 12)

This is a senior team lead position offering an excellent opportunity for professional growth and leadership development. The successful candidate will work closely with the Transition House Director to gain comprehensive cross-training in all aspects of Transition House operations and administration, including staff onboarding and training, client services, facility management, budgeting, and community partnerships.

This hybrid role includes 25 hours per week on-site at the Transition House, where the incumbent will assist in daily operations, provide client support, and help ensure the smooth delivery of services to residents. An additional 5 hours per week will be dedicated to providing administrative and executive level support to the Transition House Director, which may include report preparation, scheduling, correspondence, and coordination of special projects.

Job summary:

Assist the supervisor in providing orientation, training, work direction and guidance to resident workers. Assists clients to identify and understand personal problems and achieve personal objectives. The Senior Support Worker is responsible for the implementation and ongoing service delivery to Transition House clients, ensuring that these services are accessible and hospitable to all clients. All services must be delivered based on our Society's Ethics and Philosophy.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works as a front-line deliverer, interviews clients, manages cases, assesses issues and outlines "Share vision" services provided by the transition house during the shift.
  • Assists the Transition House Program Director by overseeing the Transition House Program in their absence.
  • Assist the Program Director in providing orientation, training, work direction and guidance to resident workers.
  • Monitors Support Worker staff in maintaining standards of cleanliness. Creates Support Worker lists and ensures spring cleaning is accomplished. Reports any shortfalls to Program Director.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of client information and any information gained as a result of employment at Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace (HGSCP).
  • Retains a thorough knowledge of community resources and collects and maintains current, appropriate resources in the support workers' office.
  • Assesses residents' immediate needs and assists them to define and implement an action plan. Provides information to residents on available resources and recommends appropriate services including all HGSCP programs such as Stopping the Violence Women's Counselling (STV), Victim Services (VSP), Child and Youth Counselling (PEACE) and Outreach.
  • Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of residents and the security of the facility. Facilitates conflict resolution between residents.
  • Provides emotional support, encouragement, goal setting and problem-solving support to residents. Facilitates residence and/or support group meetings.
  • Liaises with other service agencies and professionals. Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence. May participate in public awareness activities about services and issues of abuse.
  • Ensures housekeeping services such as laundry, housecleaning, grocery shopping and maintaining supplies are completed. Orders supplies/groceries; performs minor maintenance.
  • Manages and participates in the Transition House dinner, menu planning and food preparation as well as food inventory duties.
  • Provides crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety plan for clients, residents, and crisis line callers. Provides information, advocacy for and assistance to residents and crisis line callers.
  • Maintains professional and confidential case notes, resident records, documents, forms and statistical information.
  • Assists the Program Director with quarterly statistics. The Senior Support Worker ensures that all required documentation is complete. Reports and discusses case planning concerns with Transition House Program Director.
  • Is familiar with HGSCP Policy and Procedure Manual and the BCGEU Collective Agreement.
  • Attends educational training and participates in staff meetings as required.
  • Documents and reports in writing to management any unusual incidents and/or inappropriate behavior that is known or witnessed in a timely manner.
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Must have valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Diploma in a related human / social service field:
  • One (1) year related human/social service experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must have valid certification in Standard First Aid (2-day course) with a CPR-C component.
  • Must have Food-Safe Certification
  • BCSTH Foundations in Violence Against Women Training (online) completed.
  • BCSTH Introduction to Transition House work Module 1 (online) completed.
  • BCSTH Introduction to Transition House Work Module 2 (online) completed.
  • Completion of additional internal training offered through HGSCP as assigned: +, Indigenous Awareness, Trauma Informed Practice, Domestic Violence Safety Planning, ICAT Training, OHS Training, Mental Health First Aid, etc.)
  • Additional Training as assigned.
  • This position is dependent on a satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector).

  • Proven ability in following house directives while allowing clients their autonomy.
  • Professional and consistent skills in client documentation
  • Knowledge and understanding of 'usual practice' techniques in a Transition House would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated approach to client advocacy and follow through.

Additional Information:

This position requires working in a stressful environment often dealing with clients in crisis situations. Clients' problems often are related to physical and/or emotional abuse, and/or drug and alcohol abuse. Managing emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.
