The Recreation Coordinator works with Recreation Therapist to plan, provide input for program development, implement and provide feedback on recreation programs. The Recreation coordinator meets individualized needs in a group setting by utilizing appropriate adaptations. The Recreation Coordinator will work with residents, family members and volunteers to create an environment which fosters diversity, enables independence and dignity and provides the utmost opportunity for optimal wellness and self-actualization.

Responsible to and work under the direction of:

Recreation Therapist

Areas of Accountability:

  • Provides on-going contributions to the structuring and development of recreational department goals.
  • Welcomes and orientates new residents to the facility. Introduces resident to recreation program and facilitates introduction into social groups.
  • Maintains records of resident participation rate and documentation of individual responses to the programs offered.
  • Encourages and supports participation in recreation programs. When necessary, Recreation Coordinator assists residents to program.
  • In coordination with sites recreation team to deliver a minimum of 3 programs per day at the site.
  • In collaboration with Recreation Therapist/team, Engages in program planning which is person-centered, highly innovative and reflective of the recommendations of resident feedback mechanisms.
  • Engages in one-to-one visitations, particularly when a resident is unable or unwilling to attend programs.
  • Considers and applies program adaptations to ensure equal access for all people who would like, and/or would benefit, from the program(s) offered. This may involve extensive collaboration with the Recreation Therapist.
  • In collaboration with Recreation Therapist/Team, uses a variety of recreation and leisure programs based on the 7 areas of wellness – physical, social, cognitive, spiritual, emotional, environmental and creative/occupational. The majority of these should be implemented on a cyclical basis.
  • Observes resident response and reports accurately to the Recreation Therapist.
  • May be assigned to obtain life history /social and leisure inventory.
  • Creates and posts monthly program calendar and community newsletter.
  • Attends Resident Social Committee if applicable.
  • Practices safety consciousness with the residents and maintains a reasonably safe environment for the residents. Ensures no undue risk beyond that associated with thoughtful program participation.
  • Liaison with community partners to bring in facilitators to provide education on special topics of interest to residents and/or families
  • Be accountable for personal education and development; attend relevant workshops, seminars and conferences. Incumbent will apply learning to workplace.
  • Support and mentor students and volunteers

Minimum Educational/Experience Requirements

  • Post-secondary education considered an asset
  • Diploma/certificate in Recreation studies preferred
  • In lieu of education, extensive work experience may be considered
  • Experience with planning activities/leading recreational programs
  • First Aid and CPR Certificate required

Special Requirements

  • A current and clear Criminal Records Check with the vulnerable sector issued within 6 months of hire
  • Involves extensive standing, walking, bending and lifting (up to 20kg) – dress should reflect this
  • Requires the ability to critically assess the needs and abilities of the residents
