Position Title: Cultural Helper (Shkaabe)

Classification: Full Time Permanent

Location: Temporarily located at1970 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB during redevelopment of 160 Salter Street, Winnipeg, MB

Starting Wage: $25 - $26 per hour

Background: The Native Addictions Council of Manitoba is an Indigenous-owned and operated treatment centre that directly targets the chemical dependency and compulsion challenging Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba and throughout Canada. Our Staff, Management, and Board of Directors all have firsthand experience in dealing with the same challenges that face our relatives. Position Summary: The Cultural Helper plays a pivotal role in our organization, serving as a key point of connection to Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and traditions. The role will develop and deliver culturally relevant programming, facilitate cultural activities, and guide our Relatives in understanding Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and traditions that will empower them on their journey towards wellness. They will work closely with our team, Elders, and community members to foster an environment that values, preserves, and promotes Indigenous knowledge and practices.

Required Qualifications:

Programming & Community:

  • Develop and deliver teachings rooted in Indigenous culture and traditions, contributing to a strong cultural identity within our community.
  • Prepare and facilitate traditional ceremonies.
  • Oversee safety preparations for all outings, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and fostering respectful and culturally grounded interactions with the land.
  • Harvesting of medicines and ensuring NACM Staff and Relatives have access to ceremonial and healing medicines.

Reporting:

  • Ensure documentation is completed in a timely manner, including daily communication emails to Staff and Management, and preparing any requested forms or reports required by the Program Manager or/and Executive Director.
  • Regularly review and evaluate Cultural Support Plans and goals with the Program Manager to track progress and outcomes.

Maintenance:

  • Source, order, and manage approved materials for culturally relevant arts & crafts activities, including land-based activities.
  • Ensure up-keep, landscaping, and cleanliness for the land (such as porta-potty delivery, snow removal, and grass maintenance).
  • Purchase and care for all land-based equipment with approval (including tipi, prospector tents, cabins, etc.).
  • All other duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:

  • Addictions Counselling Diploma or related certificate is an asset.
  • 2 years' experience working with Indigenous and Northern Communities and their members.
  • 2 years' experience in group facilitation and performing ceremonies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous customs, experiences, traditions, and values is required.
  • Ability to build positive internal and external partnerships to enhance program deliverables.
  • Ability to maintain strict boundaries and confidentiality with Relatives.
  • Ability to speak and understand a First Nation's language is an asset.
  • Physical requirements including standing, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 60 lbs.
  • Occasional travel for conferences, workshops, and community events.
