uOttawa's facilities encompass three main sites that are comprised of over 600,000 square meters of building space (over 6.4 million square feet), 42.5 hectares of grounds, 125 buildings and 4,500 beds in 11 residences. There are over 150 employees in Facilities, including Project Managers, Energy and Commissioning Specialists, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Architects, and space Planners. The facilities capital and operating expenditures are in the range of $100M for the University's $2.0 billion assets under management. The 20-year Capital spending plan envisions $4.0 billion of new investment highlighted by uOttawa launch of project Top Shelf, a $300 million capital investment to build a new facility for the Faculty of Health Sciences at uOttawa's River Campus, as well as a tower at the Roger Guidon campus to house uOttawa's new Advanced Medical Research Center (AMRC).

Position purpose:
Under the authority of the Chief Operating Engineer, perform tasks related to preventive and breakdown maintenance of the Power Plant and/or assists the Shift Engineer in the supervision and control of the efficient operation of the equipment for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, throughout the campus facilities.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the Shift Engineer in the function of his duties as directed.
  • Replace the Shift Engineer in his absence from his regular shift schedule due to vacation, sick leave or special leaves.
  • Investigate calls as directed by the Shift Engineer and takes corrective measures as requested.  All requests and corrective measures are to be recorded with the preventive maintenance software.
  • Investigate all fire alarms. Assists the Fire Department and resets fire alarm panels when instructed.
  • Verify, when investigating a call in the respective mechanical rooms of the campus buildings, equipment and take action to remedy any noticed deficiencies and inform the Shift Engineer.
  • Assist the Shift Engineer in the operation of the Central Monitoring System, the Co-generation and Cascade Systems and the chilled water and heating equipment.
  • Take daily and monthly readings.
  • Perform water treatment test and chemical addition.
  • Perform daily routine check at the Sports complex, pool equipment or other location on campus as directed by Chief Operating Engineer.
  • Cleaning of all equipment as defined in a list provided by the Chief Operating Engineer.

What you will bring:

  • Possess a valid 3rd class Operating Engineer license issued by TSSA.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining equipment found in a Power Plant.
  • Knowledge of Power Plant controls and building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Ability to take charge of a shift in replacement of the Shift Engineer (on a temporary basis).
  • Must abide by the Technical Standards and Safety Act, OH&S Act & Regulations as well as pertinent University policies
  • Bilingual French and English (written and oral)
