Job Overview
Verka Food International Ltd. is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Quality Assurance Specialist – Regulatory Affairs to support regulatory compliance and food safety activities for imported and distributed food products in Canada and abroad. This position will work under the guidance and supervision of the QA & Food Safety Director and will play a vital role in maintaining compliance with CFIA, SFCR, HACCP, and GFSI-recognized standards. The successful candidate will also act as a backup regulatory contact for CFIA and other regulatory authorities when required
Key Responsibilities
Reporting & Regulatory Liaison
- Work under the guidance and supervision of the QA & Food Safety Director.
- Act as a backup contact for CFIA and other regulatory authorities, including support during inspections, audits, and regulatory communications.
- Assist with responses to CFIA findings, corrective actions, and follow-ups.
Regulatory Compliance & CFIA Requirements
- Ensure all food products comply with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulations, including the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).
- Maintain regulatory documentation & records.
- Support organic certification (as applicable), import licensing, and Preventive Control Plans (PCP).
- Monitor regulatory updates and communicate impacts to internal stakeholders.
Food Safety & Quality Systems
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of HACCP-based food safety programs.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with GFSI-recognized standards, including SQF
- Conduct internal audits, verification activities, and risk assessments.
- Support investigations, Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) reports, and recall preparedness activities.
Import Control & Supplier Compliance
- Ensure imported food products meet Canadian safety and regulatory requirements.
- Review and maintain supplier documentation, including:
- Certificates of Analysis (COA)
- -Product and ingredient specifications
- -Allergen declarations
- -Organic certificates (as applicable)
- Support supplier approvals and ongoing compliance monitoring.
- Maintain traceability records and support recall exercises for imported products.
Label Review & Nutrition Facts Panel (NFP)
- Review and approve food labels for compliance with Canadian labeling regulations, including:
- -Mandatory label elements o Bilingual (English/French) requirements
- -Allergen declarations and precautionary statements o Nutrition, organic, and other regulated claims
- Prepare, review, and verify Nutrition Facts Panels (NFP) in accordance with CFIA and Health Canada requirements.
- Ensure accuracy of ingredient lists, serving sizes, % Daily Values, and nutrient calculations.
- Coordinate label updates related to regulatory changes and transition periods.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accurate quality, regulatory, and food safety records, SOPs, and manuals.
- Support retailer, customer, and third-party audit requirements (e.g., Walmart).
- Participate in new product development reviews to ensure regulatory compliance prior to launch.
- Promote continuous improvement in quality and regulatory compliance processes.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Legislation and Regulatory Operations, or a related discipline.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in quality assurance and/or regulatory affairs within the food industry where 2 Years experience must be for Regulatory Compliance
- Experience working with CFIA, food imports, and Canadian labeling requirements.
• Prefer to have a good grasp on FDA's Food Safety and Modernization Act. - Exposure to imported food products is strongly preferred.
Certifications (Assets)
- HACCP certification
- Implementing SQF for Manufacturing
- Principles of Internal Auditing
- Any Certification to show learning and knowledge about Food Legislation and Food Labels.
Practitioner-level training or certification in HACCP, SQF, is considered a strong asset.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Strong working knowledge of:
- HACCP principles
- GFSI standards (SQF, BRCGS, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000)
- SFCR and CFIA labeling regulations
- Nutrition Facts Panel development
- Food Legislation and Regulatory Compliance.
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and regulatory portals (e.g., MyCFIA)
