What you'll be doing
As Senior Manager, Critical Environments, you will oversee the full lifecycle management of critical environment infrastructure—including generators, UPS', ATS', HVAC units—within CIBC's head office at CIBC SQUARE, a landmark two-tower development in downtown Toronto.
You'll ensure continuous uptime, regulatory compliance, and operational resilience for high-risk, business-essential technology environments. In partnership with Technology, you'll lead the Critical Environments Program at CIBC Square, working closely with facilities management partners to maintain infrastructure, respond to emergencies, and manage asset lifecycles.
Acting as the real estate lead for critical environments at CIBC SQUARE, you will provide technical leadership and manage service providers, integrating key stakeholders such as landlords, technology teams, security, capital planning, and project management to deliver comprehensive operational oversight.
At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You'll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you'll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote. Additional details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview.
How you'll succeed
- Support CIBC Square North commissioning and start-up of critical environments and lead ongoing operations to achieve and maintain steady-state performance, managing vendor and landlord relationships and ensuring seamless infrastructure transition.
- Direct daily operations and maintenance of critical infrastructure systems (power, cooling, HVAC, life safety) to ensure continuous uptime and compliance with service levels.
- Oversee contract compliance and vendor performance, ensuring reliable system monitoring, prompt issue resolution, and alignment with regulatory standards.
- Lead emergency preparedness and incident response, including developing protocols, managing escalations, and providing technical leadership during critical events.
- Serve as subject matter expert on operational risk and business continuity associated with mechanical/electrical infrastructure, developing and maintaining processes to support resiliency and recovery.
- Manage operational and capital budgets for CE infrastructure, track expenditures, guide upgrades/replacements, and develop business cases with Technology teams.
- Review and approve engineering plans, procedures, and project development & execution in collaboration with service providers, landlords, and internal stakeholders.
- Foster strong relationships with stakeholders across Real Estate, Technology, business units, landlords, and external partners to support operational objectives.
- Evaluate and maintain SOPs, EOPs and MOPs to ensure technical accuracy and alignment with CIBC standards.
- Coordinate routine testing and preparedness exercises to validate infrastructure performance and readiness.
- Communicate effectively with senior management and other key stakeholders, especially during emergencies, by presenting complex technical solutions and issues in a clear, accessible manner
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders—including business units, service providers, landlords, and technology teams—to support high-availability operations, effective incident response, and shared objectives.
Who you are
- A collaborative relationship builder who excels at engaging diverse stakeholders to drive operational effectiveness and achieve common goals.
- A proven technical expert with a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field (P.Eng. additional credentials such as FMA, RPA, BOMI SMT/SMA, C.Tech., A.Sc.T., or rd/4th Class Power Engineering preferred).
- Experienced in managing critical infrastructure, data centers, or high-rise commercial environments (minimum 10 years).
- Skilled in building systems (chillers, UPS, cooling towers, BAS, electrical infrastructure) & familiarity with compliance standards including WHMIS, building codes, and safety regulations.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office and facilities management systems (e.g., CMMS).
- Adept at problem-solving, root cause analysis, and managing incidents in high-stakes environments.
- Effective communicator who can translate complex technical issues for senior management and non-technical audiences.
- Proactive in identifying operational improvements, innovation, and ensuring strict adherence to standards and regulations.
- Demonstrates strong leadership, vendor management, and the ability to balance competing priorities.
