Primary Purpose: To support management of ongoing research projects, provide pre-award support for competitive research grant applications, obtain and manage ethics approval for research, provide other post-award administration support, oversee student and staff output, and organize day-to-day administrative matters for the VNELab.
Nature of Work: Reporting to Dr. Hassan Vatanparast (Professor at College of Pharmacy and Nutrition/School of Public Health, Founder of VNELab), the VNELab Research Lab Manager is responsible for project management, overseeing the day-to-day activities and technical aspects of VNELab's research projects, coordinating and drafting research funding applications, obtaining and managing ethics for research projects, and overseeing student and staff output, including manuscripts, applications, or internal deliverables. The VNELab Research Lab Manager works both independently and in a team environment with students, faculty, staff, and external partners/collaborators. This position requires the ability to deal with complex problems, manage tight internal/external deadlines, and balance numerous priorities. The position may, on occasion, require long and/or irregular hours. The position mainly includes office work completed remotely; however, the position also requires attendance and coordination of in-person activities such as meetings, workshops, data collection sessions, and field travel. A Saskatchewan driver's license and vehicle are needed to facilitate research events and data collection sessions.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
- Serve as a project manager at VNELab, overseeing research projects in the lab.
- Oversees development of project protocols, ethics applications, and workflow.
- Provides recruitment, training, and supervision of student research assistants and works collaboratively with project leaders.
- Prepares annual and progress funding reports (including budget and scientific progress).
- Provides presentations to key stakeholders, team members, and the general public on progress of research.
- Collaborates and supports knowledge translation and synthesis of fundings via conference presentations, scientific manuscripts, and community reports.
- Orders materials and supplies required for research.
- Oversee and manage project funds.
- Prepares and organizes funding applications for local, national, and international grants.
- Drafts research proposals and incorporates feedback.
- Prepares research budget estimates.
- Coordinates with team members, stakeholders, collaborators, and research partners.
- Collaborates, communicates, and coordinates with internal and external stakeholders, community partners, and international team members.
- Provides professional support to Dr. Hassan Vatanparast in day-to-day administrative tasks.
Education: A minimum of 3 years of education/training/experience in a relevant related field. A Master's degree in nutrition and/or public health field would be considered an asset.
Licenses: No licenses required.
Experience:. Experience in: (i) facilitating and managing research projects, (ii) academic writing and proposal development, (iii) supervising students and staff, (vi) fostering a supportive, effective, and cooperative working environment, (vii) professional democratic leadership and communication, (viii) organizational skills and time management.
Skills: Demonstrated capacity to manage projects of varying size and complexity; ability to manage multiple projects and tasks with competing deadlines; ability to synthesize and summarize information to a variety of audiences; knowledge of public health domains, nutritional sciences, research methodology, and quantitative data analysis; ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships; ability to work independently, as a team member, and as a team leader; ability to oversee and manage project funds; proficient computer skills (Microsoft platforms) and working knowledge of reference managers (i.e., Zotero), and statistical software's (i.e., SPSS, SAS); and excellent communication, presentation, organization, time management, problem-solving, troubleshooting, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
