Your Opportunity
The Primary Care Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team at the University of Toronto Student Health and Wellness Centre.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations, the Primary Care RN provides exceptional, holistic, culturally safe nursing care in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures while upholding the University of Toronto Health and Wellness' Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of the nursing process as well as sound critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making abilities. The RN will be skilled at performing physical and mental health assessments on students presenting to Health & Wellness, identify and prioritize concerns, and implement andevaluate a plan of care in collaboration with the inter-professional team.
The Primary Care RN will perform both comprehensive and focused health assessments including past health history, medication reconciliation, physical examination, and/ormental health evaluation; risk screening to determine if there is an emergent/urgent medical concern, or an imminent safety risk including risk of suicide/self-harm or harm to others and applying appropriate interventions; collaborate with Primary Care Physicians and other members of the inter-professional team to provide optimal patient care to students with a wide range of physical and mental health conditions; participate in client care case conferences with other providers to deliver coordinated, comprehensive and appropriate services; lead/participate in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of health promotion and screening programs; lead the drafting of new medical directives and policies/procedures and revising/updating existing medical directives, policies and procedures; provide health teaching related to healthy living, prevention of injury, illness and communicable diseases, care and treatment of specific conditions, and available resources as appropriate to the client situation;participate in maintaining clinic operations such as vaccine and medication inventory and ordering; perform/assist physicians with minor procedures (ear syringing, IUD insertions); complete TB skin testing and immunization forms for students; work under medical directives to provide care; respond to emergency codes as part of the inter-professional team (medical emergency, violent situation); document in accordance with CNO and institutional requirements, updating and maintaining patient records within the EMR; assist physicians to follow up on lab and diagnostic imaging reports.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Assessing the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs
- Determining if there is a life-threatening illness, risk of self-harm or harm to others and independently applying appropriate interventions
- Providing detailed information to physicians regarding patient needs and background history as required
- Providing ongoing health counselling to patients
- Updating and maintaining patient records
- Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required. Current registration, in good standing with no practice restrictions, as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Liability insurance or membership in a professional associationwhich offers liability insurance (i.e. RNAO).
- Minimum five years of clinical practice experience in a primary health setting (i.e. Family Practice, Community Nursing, Occupational Nursing, Emergency).
- Clinical practice experience in providing mental health nursing care.
- Excellent decision-making, problem solving, critical thinking, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Demonstrates the ability towork professionally and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Prioritizes and manages time effectively and is flexible in an active work environment.
- Good judgment and sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness.
- Demonstrates cultural awareness; respectful of cultural diversity.
- Current CPR certification.
- Demonstrates knowledge of primary health care, mental health, and the impacts of the social determinants of health, specifically for the student population.
- Understands the importance of evidenced based practice within the health care field.
- Understands and demonstrates application of the College of Nurses Standards of Practice including, but not limited to, ethics, confidentiality, and documentation.
- Understands the role of Health & Wellness within the University.
- Understands and implements the concepts of PHIPA and PIPEDA.
- Computer skills required (EMR, Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook).
