Your role

Radio-Canada Toronto is looking for an enthusiastic Senior Writer with strong journalistic skills and experience in digital news to join our daily news team. 

Working for Radio-Canada Toronto website and associated digital platforms, you will be expected to write news stories to tight deadlines. The successful candidate must be able to create and coordinate digital news content and add relevant multimedia material to stories to enhance their value to the audience.

The weekly schedule of 38.75 hours is spread over two (2) days during the week in addition to the two (2) weekend days (Saturday and Sunday). This position is a 12-month temporary replacement.

Function:

Selects Radio-Canada assigned stories and writes material for publication on Radio-Canada and our associated social platforms. Demonstrates and maintains exceptional skill in writing headline news stories, editing, and packaging following Radio-Canada's style to tight deadlines. Work is governed by and adheres to CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies, standards, and practices. Editorial leadership provides guidance, but initiative and independent judgment are expected. Work can involve the coordination or revision of the activities of others and close cooperation with other journalists is essential.

Key tasks:

  • Writes, edits, packages, and publishes digital content in a clear and concise manner for a regional and national audience.

  • Curates and updates of the Radio-Canada Toronto landing page.

  • Ensures the website and stories adhere to the priorities of the day.

  • Gathers and reports information from various sources.

  • Re-writes material as necessary to make it more relevant to the platform.

  • Ensures all text conforms to Standard French grammar and Radio-Canada's style, including proper spellings and capitalization.

  • Writes headlines to search and social guidelines.

  • Selects photos, and video/audio clips to accompany online stories.

  • Critically edits material written by others and/or items produced by others and provides constructive feedback.

  • Prepares and writes articles and headlines from information provided by reporters, or wire copy, CBC, or original sources.

We are looking for a candidate with the following: 

  • University degree or equivalent

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of directly related experience that includes proven knowledge of online and digital news media

  • Substantial and demonstrable knowledge of regional, national and international issues

  • Sound editorial judgment to evaluate information and ability to work effectively under pressure in a newsroom with tight deadlines

  • Ability to write on a wide range of news and current affairs topics

  • Experience and proven ability to write and edit using best practices and style for digital platforms

  • Ability to select and edit photos and video to enhance storytelling

  • Experience in determining potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations in digital content

  • Must be available to work shift work

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to determine the newsworthiness of a story for online audiences

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong team player

  • Excellent French communication and writing skills and a very good knowledge of English
