Lead Industrial Layout/Survey Technician

Location: Ontario, Canada (Extensive Travel Required within Province)

Company: Labrosse Consulting Inc. – Leaders in Advanced Surveying Solutions

Company Overview:

Labrosse Consulting Inc. is a provider of cutting-edge surveying and geomatics services, leveraging advanced technology to deliver precise results for industrial and civil engineering projects. We pride ourselves on our modern equipment, innovative software, and a collaborative team culture focused on quality and efficiency.

Job Summary:

Labrosse Consulting Inc. is seeking a Lead Industrial Layout/Survey Technician to join our team in Ontario. In this senior role, you will lead and execute industrial site surveys and layouts using state-of-the-art equipment, including the Stonex R180 Total Station (Cube-A v7 software) and the Emlid RS3 GNSS base/rover system (Emlid Flow 360 software). You will also use AutoCAD Civil 3D 2026 for drafting and data processing. The ideal candidate is highly self-sufficient, quick to learn new equipment with minimal instruction, and able to work independently in the field. This position involves significant field work (approximately 60% travel, sometimes in remote locations) combined with office or home-based work (approximately 40%). Reporting to the Project Manager, the Lead Technician will ensure accurate project layout and survey data collection, and will have access to the CEO for support in critical situations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Industrial Site Surveys & Layouts: Perform precise layout of industrial projects, construction sites, and other project locations using advanced surveying instruments (Stonex R180 total station and Emlid RS3 GNSS). Ensure that all layout work adheres to project plans and high accuracy standards.
  • Equipment Operation: Confidently set up, operate, and troubleshoot the Stonex R180 with Cube-A v7 and the Emlid RS3 with Flow 360 software. Calibrate equipment as needed and maintain it in good working order. Quickly adapt to and learn any new survey gear or software introduced.
  • Data Collection & CAD Drafting: Collect field data and measurements, then process and import this data into AutoCAD Civil 3D 2026 to produce or update site drawings, maps, and layout plans. Verify that CAD drawings accurately reflect field conditions.
  • Project Coordination: Work closely with project managers and other team members to understand project requirements and timelines. Plan daily survey activities, and provide regular updates on progress. Coordinate fieldwork logistics, including travel to sites and remote camp arrangements when necessary.
  • Quality Control & Safety: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of all survey data. Conduct on-site checks (double-check measurements, use redundant methods when possible) to guarantee quality. Follow all safety guidelines on job sites, especially when working in industrial or construction environments.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Keep detailed field notes, records of survey data, and equipment logs. Prepare concise reports or summaries of survey findings for project managers and clients as required.
  • Mentoring & Leadership: As a lead technician, demonstrate professionalism and strong work ethic. You may mentor junior technicians or crew members, sharing knowledge of best practices in surveying and proper use of advanced equipment.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Experience & Education: 5+ years of relevant surveying/layout experience OR 2+ years of experience with a post-secondary diploma in Geomatics, GIS, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Previous work in industrial construction surveying or site layout is highly valued.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient with modern surveying tools and software. Experience with total stations (ideally Stonex or similar) and GNSS survey systems is required. Familiarity with Cube-A (v7) and Emlid Flow 360 (or comparable survey software) and strong skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D (2026 or similar version) are essential.
  • Self-Sufficiency: Demonstrated ability to learn new equipment and software quickly with minimal guidance. Proven track record of working independently in the field, problem-solving on the job, and delivering accurate results under minimal supervision.
  • Language Skills: Fluent English proficiency (spoken and written) is mandatory for clear communication and report writing. Bilingualism (English/French or other) is an asset and will be considered favorably.
  • Travel & Flexibility: Willingness to travel extensively within Ontario. The job will involve about 60% travel, including potential assignments at remote camp sites on a 14-day on / 14-day off rotation. Must be able to work away from home for extended periods and adapt to varying work environments. The remaining ~40% of time, work will be done from home or the local office.
  • Work Schedule: Flexibility to work occasional weekends or night shifts as projects demand. Our projects sometimes require surveying to be done during off-hours or continuously over a span of days.
  • Driver's License: A valid Ontario Class G driver's license with a clean driver's abstract is required. You will be responsible for driving to job sites (which may include off-road or distant locations) safely.
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of performing fieldwork in various outdoor conditions. This includes walking, standing for long periods, and carrying equipment over uneven terrain. Must follow safety protocols in industrial and construction sites.
  • Additional Skills: Good communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with team members and occasionally with clients or site personnel. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure accurate record-keeping and documentation.

Compensation:

  • Hourly Rate: $35.00 – $45.00 per hour (CAD), commensurate with experience and knowledge.
  • This role is full-time and overtime or additional allowances will be provided as per employment standards and company policies for travel assignments.
  • Labrosse Consulting Inc. offers a competitive compensation package. Details on any additional benefits (such as health insurance, retirement plans, or travel per diems) will be discussed during the interview process.
