The Department of Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University is a multi-campus operation, supporting the growth and development of safe and inclusive residence communities on the Brantford and Waterloo Campuses. Reporting to the Manager, Residence Life (RLM) on the Brantford Campus, the Residence Life Area Coordinator (RLAC) is responsible for the day-to-day operational supervision of assigned residence buildings at Wilfrid Laurier University. RLACs are expected to enhance the living and learning environment of Laurier residence buildings by prioritizing staff and student development, resident outreach, community building, attention to facilities, and administrative organization. RLACs are engaged members of the Residence Life Team that are collectively responsible for residence student staff selection and supervision, as well as the development and implementation of student staff training. Further, RLACs will participate in portfolio work with members of the Department of Residence Team to support the mission and vision of the Department. The RLAC is also responsible for investigating student conduct, enforcing residence policy, and supporting student leadership development. Successful professionals in the RLAC role approach the position as a lifestyle, regularly interacting with students and staff. The RLAC position is a full-time, live-in staff member who works to maintain Laurier's standards of community living and provides opportunities for students to be active participants in safe residence communities that support individual growth and development.The RLAC assumes primary responsibility and direct supervision of Residence Life Dons, providing developmental coaching to assist Dons in enhancing the skills necessary to succeed in their role. In partnership with the Residence Education unit, RLACs are responsible for the comprehension, promotion, and delivery of a residential curriculum for the residence population. To maintain safety and security as a high priority on behalf of Residence Life at Laurier, the RLAC will also participate in an after-hours on-call shift rotation. The RLAC is expected to manage and triage low to intermediate level emergency situations, applying conflict resolution skills and counselling techniques when necessary. When appropriate, the RLAC will direct higher-impact situations to the Manager, Residence Life (RLM), on-call.Accountabilities Staff Supervision & DevelopmentFacilitate move-in & move-out processes for Residence Life Dons, and support the management of Laurier's move-in and first year orientation processExecute the selection and evaluation of Department of Residence student staff in partnership with the Residence Education unitAssist with the development and delivery of on-going training programs for Department of Residence student staff including summer training modules, August Student Staff Training, monthly in-service training and weekly training during staff meetingsConduct weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with Residence Life DonsProvide ongoing support and development to Residence Life Dons throughout ambiguous or unclear situations, and complete performance management when appropriate.Administrative DutiesBe responsive to administrative requests made by staff in the Department of Residence in a timely mannerMonitor the Residence Documentation System, manage conduct as assigned by the Manager, Residence Student Conduct and Residence Life Conduct Coordinator, and assign appropriate residence sanctions as defined by the Residence Code of ConductManage and supervise the implementation of residence building community initiatives and funding requestsAssume responsibility of portfolios as assigned by Managers, Residence Life (RLMs) and the Associate Director, Residence LifeGuide Residence Life Dons in the implementation of departmental and institutional policies and standard operating proceduresManage timely submission of all documentation by Residence Life Dons, including employment contracts, community documentation, and entries in the Residence Documentation SystemReport, track and follow up on facilities issues in residencePreparing documentation (i.e. meeting agendas, performance evaluations, conduct meeting notes, incident reports, etc.)Report, track and follow up on facilities issues in residenceBe responsive to requests made by Campus and Community PartnersStudent & Community DevelopmentInteract with a diverse residence population, providing students with the support necessary for healthy personal and community growthMaintain high visibility within residence communities as part of a live-in positionSupport, advise and provide appropriate referrals for residents in need of professional services to address wellness needsPromote and engage in programming, events and workshops developed by Department of Residence staff on an ongoing basis to support the Residence curricular model and the First Year Leadership ProgramLiaise with professional staff at Wilfrid Laurier University on behalf of residents and DonsDevelop and implement new programs and services that improve the quality of life in residence, as agreed to by Managers, Residence LifeParticipate in departmental committees and task forcesMaintain regular office hours Monday through Friday in the Department of Residence OfficeBe responsive to requests from students, parents and guardians regarding concerns with residence experience After-hour shift Responsibilities [Brantford]Participate in a 24/7 after-hour shift rotation as assigned by the RLM. This rotation also includes the Residence Education Coordinator and Residence Education Student Coordinator in Brantford, which results in the RLAC typically being on-call every 3 weeks.During the Academic Year, the RLAC assumes after-hour responsibilities beginning during Student Staff move-in and concluding at the end of the winter term exam period (September – end of April). The 24/7 on-call shift rotation is temporarily paused during the campus closure between the Fall and Winter semesters.During the Spring/Summer semester, RLACs participate in a 24/7 on-call shift rotation from Monday-Sunday, as assigned by the RLM.After-hour responsibilities are intended to provide ongoing support to student staff working in residence buildingsWhile on-shift, the RLAC will respond to all residence situations identified by Residence Life student staff, and triage accordingly based on the severity of the situation based on Standard Operating Procedures.Qualifications Completed bachelor's degree plus one (1) year of experience in Residence Life at the student staff and/or professional levelProven ability to work in a continuously changing organizationHighly motivated and proven leadership abilityExperience developing residence communities focused on student success and learning.Working knowledge of team building and student staff supervision in a residence environmentAbility to deliver training programsDemonstrated creativity, initiative, and an ability to complete tasksAbility to interact and communicate with all levels of the university communityDemonstrated ability to make ethical and moral decisionsPossess the ability to interact effectively with many students Hours of WorkThis is a Full-time, Limited-term opportunity with an anticipated contract length of 13 months.The normal hours of work are 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours may be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to periods of high volume. When possible, the manager will adjust hours to ensure no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.This role requires daily in person attendance and is not eligible for a flexible work arrangement as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy).As per the PAG Handbook, prior approval is required to return to a previous position after a Limited-Term Position.CompensationLevel: ERate of Pay: $ $44.74 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $48.37 per hour.
