JOB SCOPE

This is a technical position responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and controlling a range of activities related to the operation and maintenance of drinking water and wastewater systems. This position requires extensive knowledge, experience and competence in the municipal drinking water and wastewater field. This position will require extensive travel throughout the west coast of Newfoundland.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials, methods and procedures used in water treatment maintenance and operation.

  • Skilled in the operation of process control instrumentation, small tools and related equipment.

  • Ability to work safely, communicate effectively and establish and maintain positive working relationships with communities, consultants, government departments and the general public.

  • Exceptional organization skills and the ability to keep accurate records of various types of data and information.

  • Ability to work independently and make decisions on a daily basis.

TECHNICAL & OPERATIONAL DUTIES

  1. Oversee and supervise the daily operation and maintenance of public drinking water and wastewater systems. This will include supervision of required daily monitoring activities such as monitoring chlorine residuals, flow data, disinfection/treatment facilities, chemical usage, lift station operation, etc.

  2. Develop and implement a Preventative Maintenance Program, Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Plans, and Asset Management Plans.

  3. Maintain a record of safety related documents for all chemicals and equipment being utilized by the drinking water and wastewater systems participating in the program. This would include MSDS, NSF documentation, manufacturers recommendations, safety training documentation, etc.

  4. Perform assessments of drinking water systems, identify deficiencies, and provide recommendations for maintenance and infrastructure upgrading.

  5. Perform calculations involved in the operation and maintenance of drinking water and wastewater systems such as chemical usage, chemical dosage, flow rates, pressures, volumes, etc.

  6. Respond to community complaints regarding drinking water or wastewater issues and implement appropriate corrective measures.

  7. Review and maintain a record of drinking water and wastewater quality data.

  8. Research and review new and innovative technologies and methodologies for application in the municipal drinking water and wastewater sectors.

  9. Undertake any other duty as assigned by the Regional Service Board.

  10. Participate in operator education, training and certification programs offered by the department of Environment and Climate Change

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in water treatment, engineering, engineering technology, millwright or a related field would be an asset.

  • 5 years related work experience.

  • Ability to work independently

  • Must possess a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Driver's license
