The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.

The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs.  It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution.  

In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students.

The Collective Closet is a clothing-swap initiative aimed at providing students with affordable access to clothing while advocating for sustainable consumption. The Collective Closet is a non-profit service under the Commission of Environmental Sustainability (CES), targeting the climate effects of fast-fashion.  As a non-profit, the Collective Closet operates using a take-one, leave-one model, wherein patrons may trade an article of clothing for any item in the store's stock. Patrons may choose to trade items immediately, or exchange items for store credit they may use at a later date. The Collective Closet hosts regular store hours, located in the JDUC room 212, as well as recurring pop-up booths in student centers. The service also holds multiple clothing drives throughout the year. The Collective Closet also partakes in many advocacy campaigns pertaining to slow-fashion, conscious consumption, and climate awareness. The Collective Closet also partakes in many collaborative initiatives across campus to serve as an equity resource for students in need. 
Responsibilities  
  • Staff the Collective Closet regularly through volunteer shifts of 3 hours each and perform all necessary tasks while on shift  
  • Assist in marketing and outreach activities with the Collective Closet Deputy  
  • Assist in tasks such as: refolding clothing items, updating the store credit log, organizing donation items. 
  • Fill out volunteer notes during shift and complete set out duties  
  • Attend all training sessions to become familiar with the department and adhere to the general operations of the department   
  • Be productive, efficient and attentive in completing assigned tasks during shifts   
  • Follow all AMS policy as outlined in the Volunteer Policy and Procedures Manual   
  • Attend any scheduled meetings
