Job description

Canada After School Group is a fast-growing year-round learning centre for kids in JK through to Grade 12. It offers a variety of subjects including English, Math, French, Art, etc.

Note: This is an onsite position and all teachers are required to teach in-person class on our campus. Teachers are welcome to teach on both of our campuses - North York campus and Markham campus.

The Role:

Preference will be given to instructors who can work a minimum of 3 to 5 days per week during our after-school (Monday to Friday 4pm - 8pm) and weekend centre hours(Saturdays and Sundays 9am-6pm). Instructors must be available to teach in-person from our centre location.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver well-structured, interactive bilingual lessons (Chinese and English) with a clear focus on student language proficiency, cultural awareness, and academic growth, catering to learners from Grades 1–12.
  • Design and implement subject-specific teaching strategies for Chinese (Mandarin) language arts, literature, and cultural studies, as well as English language instruction, tailored to different age groups and proficiency levels.
  • Employ effective classroom management techniques to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and critical thinking in both languages.
  • Integrate cultural elements, innovative teaching tools, and immersive activities into lessons to enhance students' understanding of Chinese culture and bilingual communication skills.
  • Maintain a student-centered, growth-oriented approach, adapting teaching methods to address diverse learning styles and support each student's bilingual development.
  • Differentiate instruction, assignments, and assessments to meet the unique linguistic and academic needs of individual learners, including those with varying Chinese/English proficiency levels.
  • Collaborate professionally with colleagues to develop bilingual curriculum materials, align teaching objectives with school standards, and participate in academic meetings and professional development.
  • Monitor and track student progress, provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents, and adjust teaching plans to ensure continuous academic and linguistic improvement.
  • Promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation through extracurricular activities (e.g., Chinese cultural clubs, language competitions) as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from a recognized university, preferably in Education, Chinese Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, or a related field.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in both Mandarin Chinese (simplified/traditional characters) and English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
  • A minimum of 2 years of formal teaching experience in bilingual (Chinese-English) instruction or subject-specific teaching (Chinese/English) for K-12 students.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver engaging bilingual lessons, integrate cultural content, and adapt to diverse student needs.
  • Familiarity with K-12 curriculum standards for Chinese and English language arts, and proficiency in using modern teaching tools (e.g., interactive whiteboards, educational software) for bilingual instruction.
  • Valid teaching certification (e.g., OCT, state/provincial teaching license, or equivalent) is preferred; candidates in the process of obtaining certification will also be considered.
  • Strong classroom management, time management, and organizational skills, with a commitment to student-centered learning and academic excellence.
  • Passion for bilingual education, cross-cultural exchange, and fostering students' language proficiency and cultural literacy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

Note: While candidates with experience teaching both Chinese and English are highly preferred, those with specialized expertise in one language (Chinese or English) and strong proficiency in the other are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in international schools or bilingual education institutions is a plus.
