Position Summary:  

This position will report to the WBS Manger, the on-call worker is responsible for responding to all calls received outside of normal office hours.  This position is responsible for a broad range of child and youth welfare services including intake, assessment, and clinical interventions with children and their families in communities.  This person will be required to initiate investigations of abuse/neglect, offer crisis intervention services, admit children into care are safe and protected. This position answers incoming calls then connect with the manager or supervisor before making any decision making.

Responsibilities:

  • To be available for situations after business hours on a rotating "on-call" /cover- off basis;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other emergency service providers;
  • Adhere to the legislative requirements of the Saskatchewan Child Protection Standards;
  • Seek supervisory involvement and approval on all decisions or actions before an action or decision is made;
  • Screen calls to determine if there are reasonable and probable grounds to initiate investigation; 
  • Refer caller to more appropriate service providers, when appropriate; intervene when it is determined children are, or may be, at risk of harm to ensure child's safety and well-being;
  • Provide or arrange for emergency services such as the apprehension and placement of children; the provision of in-home support; emergency financial assistance;
  • Advise the supervisor immediately of serious occurrences and all other case situations.

Education and Experience: 

  • High School Diploma with direct related experience, however, others with a combination of skills, education and experience that would allow them to do the job may be considered;
  • Working knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and Regulations;
  • Knowledge of and experience in assessing the needs of abused/neglected children, the safety of children within a family, the risk of further abuse/neglect to a child, and child development;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Possession of First Aid and CPR certificates an asset;

Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities: 

  • Display respect and consideration when dealing with foster parents, family members, other service providers and the general public.
  • The position requires the skill and ability to engage with both voluntary and involuntary individuals;
  • The ability to be non judgmental, exercise good judgment, and maintain objectivity when working under pressure; 
  • Knowledge of child development; 
  • The ability to work independently;  
  • The ability to prioritize; 
  • Excellent communication skills; 
  • Perform other related duties as defined and assigned by the reporting Manager or designate on an as and when required basis. 

Other: 

  • Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) with vulnerable sector search as a condition of employment;
  • Must possess a valid Saskatchewan Driver's License.
